Debit card fraud desperste help

Dear Team

I wonder if you could help me as I am desperate

I went with my friends to see a couple of concerts in mexico this week and had a harrowing experience

Om Sunday 11th after the concert we went to a bar in mexico city

We arrived around 2345 local

We had 2 or 3 beers each and my friend and I split the bill.

The barman came took my debit card and ID and my friends cc and id which he said was to prove its our card

After 3 or 4 mins the barman never returned so I went to look for him.

He was behind a desk at the bar entrance doing something strange

I was suspicious and told him to give me my card which he replied wait wait

After a few seconds he gave back my card saying doesnt work.! We had to then pay cash from my friends

In the bar i immediately checked my online bank to see my account had been wiped of £3000 including my overdraft.( my friends cc £3265).!

I protested angrily and was told sorry dont understand and was ushered out.

We were in the bar 1 hour

I called natwest ( had to wait an hour until they opened)

On calling they directly rejected my claim saying i entered my pin

This is incorrect no terminal was ever presented.

I felt sick

I complained to Natwest and they said go to the police and get a report

This was done the next day with some Mexican friends to help translate

On arrival in london yesterday i called natwest directly asking if i should also file a uk report which they said yes

5 mins later i receive an email rejecting my claim stating i entered my pin

This is really not the case and i never even got to present any police reports to support my claim

In Mexico the police advised they know this bar and its hugely corrupt with many similar complaints

They advised they are building a case yo close it down

Natwest reject all aspects and im currently £3017.48 out of pocket + around £80 of continuous calls ftom my mobile

I had never entered a pin and on top £3017 taken illegally wiping almost my £2350 overdraft raised no security concerns at natwest

I am in a hopeless position and having to borrow cash to survive the month

Please any help is appreciated as its making me ill!

Natwest fraud team not only rude but made me out to be a liar and a criminal

My friends halifax credit card was refunded in full

Thanks for any support i really need help

Why the hell did you give the barman your credit card if you had enough cash? If your bank dig their heels in, your only recourse is a complaint to the ombudsman but, be aware, this will not be a quick resolution. You need to have exhausted the banks complaints procedure first, and that can take a while.

I'm posting here in good faith, hoping this is not another Friday night wind up.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

You can make a formal complaint to NatWest and take it to the FOS if not satidfied with their response. But if they have evidence that the transaction was PIN verified then you'll have to explain how that happened if you hope to have any chance of getting your money back.
  • Thats done
The police report states that they do it in mexico and how its done
    Its scarey actually
Biggest concern is i had £700 credit and it wiped my whole overdraft why was there no security measures in place?

If Nat West believe a PIN was used, that is a security measure.

not sure i understand this - i cant get 3000 cash out using a pin in the uk never mind mexico

are you saying they used it for a purchase?
  • The transaction went to BP ventas retail. No purchase. My friends CC showed 1 tx as same and another different.

They have 2 card machines one plugs into another and they can over ride any pin number.

Police told us how it works

You're not making sense - if NatWest have evidence that a PIN was used then a PIN was used unless you can prove otherwise. Hearsay about 2 card machines and a sprinkling of fairy dust isn't proof.
  • Look i hear you. I didnt enter a pin or ever see a terminal. The police explained how they over write the pin withe a terminal they plug into the regular terminal. That is fhe issue. Ive re searched on line and it also shows how its done.
This is a crazy expensive lesson.
    £6265 for 1 hour in a bar
  • Hardly fairy dust. Appreciate your friendliness and support

Bank customers who have had thousands of pounds stolen from their accounts have been refused compensation on the basis they did not safeguard their Pin – even though it can be easily bypassed by fraudsters.

Criminals can override a Pin by stealing a debit card, making a copy of it and overlaying a new Pin number onto the cloned card, termed a 'Yescard'.

The problem is in addition to the!flaw in the chip and Pin system!highlighted last week by This is Money, which enables an undisclosed number of the nation's 60,500 ATMs to pay out cash even if a withdrawal is made with a fake 'cloned' card.

Fraud experts have said the 'Yescard' deception is another loophole in the chip and Pin system, regarded as almost fraud-proof by banks and praised by the Government throughout the current National Fraud Prevention week.

The 'Yescard' is a practice used widely on the Continent, where chip and Pin cards have been in use for longer, and it is beginning to gain hold in the UK.

Fraudsters can make withdrawals on any cash machine or handheld card device that is working offline, or not connected to your bank. Such machines only verify transactions periodically with a bank's electronic database as there is a charge for each verification or a slight time delay.
