New MOT rules in May - EML light

Thats exactly it. A fault code reader for about a tenner off of ebay. Clear the codes and the light before going in. Unless its something dramatically bad, the car has a count to hit before the light will come back on, which could take several days.

That was the reason for my question; you can easily erase the code for re-test but if it means that certain other tests need to be carried out (such as emissions) because other impacted systems need to be re-tested then it could still fail.

I've come across cars that will pass perfectly fine with the EML light on but fail if the code is reset. The reason it passes is because the car runs in open-loop i.e. factory stored fuelling map rather than using live (faulty) sensor readings.

This can depend on the re-test. If a vehicles EML related stored code is cleared prior to MOT test then fine.

Talking about open/closed loop; if a code is to return when closed loop, then the vehicle clearly needs a diagnosis and repair anyhow. That would justify a vehicle failure for EML.

Depending on what a vehicle fails on (say brakes), then a partial re-test wouldnt mean a emissions test is necessary and the EML/closed or open loop systems shouldnt come into it. That means that the faulty (failed) competent(s) have been replaced, then checked on the re-test and is pretty much instantly passed by most places.

Tyre pressure sensors also going to come in to MOT if your car should have them and it hasnt and been replaced with ordinary tyre valves ....fail. Plus some sensing valves ie vauxhall ones you can only fit to a wheel once as you cant remove them without them breaking....£50 a time !!!

    For cars from 1/1/2012 on.

All new cars type-approved from Nov 2012 had to be fitted with TPMS, and all new cars registered from Nov 2014 have to.

So there's only a very small section of cars where TPMS is testable if fitted, and cars where it's not legally required to be fitted.

TPMS has been a fail for those fitted post 2012 indeed. But only if inoperative/faulty.

However, from 20th May 2018 onwards under the new 2014/45 directive; if a tyre is under inflated enough to bring the TPMS light on then I believe it would be a major (fail). This being because the tyre is obviously under inflated.

A new item to effectively fail on, even if you could conduct a brake roller test and drive on it. Some systems can bring a TPMS light on after a matter of 4-5psi of under inflation.

There are a few new additions with the implementation of the EU based road safety directive.

Indeed - not failing for an underinflated tyre's been quite a major omission until now. Bring it on!
  • My Citroen C-Crosser has the fuel additive service required warning light on. Will this now fail the new MOT?
Even though this warning light comes on when the bag containing the fuel additive is half full there is supposed to be around three years worth left in the bag.
As being some kind of service light as in service now due for the car or Fuel is low etc are these classed as a fail?
  • This mess gets even worse . Our car year 2000 Puma has just failed an MOT because the mil failed to illuminate.....What a mess
So the tester says its failed to illuminate so its a fail. BUT there is not one fitted to this car , "how do i know that" says helpful tester "it's the law" . VOSDA say if you can't test it it can't fail this is not helpful either because is there one or not so it's a subjective and down to the person testing . Is this going to happen every year at MOT . GRRRRRRRRRRR

Yes, there is. Everything even vaguely recent has electronic injection with a warning light. Not only that, but 2000 was right on the cusp of EOBD standardised diagnostics being legally required.

Your tester is right. The reason you think that there's no light is almost certainly that somebody's removed the bulb. I wonder why they'd do that...?

Is this going to happen every year at MOT .
Until you put a bulb back in, and then fix the reason it'll undoubtedly be showing a fault.
