As has been mentioned - the one main niggle for me is that wine cooler on its own at the end of a run of tall units. I'd have either a freestanding American style FF there, or a smeg one or something attractive. Gives you future choice rather than having to have an exact same size one to fit into a gap. Or another tall larder type unit, or built in FF. Really don't like freestanding !!!!!! in gaps, but maybe that's just personal choice. The wine cooler just looks wrong (as mentioned, like an afterthought). Should be neatly built in somewhere. Would be much more streamlined to match the tall units.

Personally I'd prefer the hob in the island rather than the sink but again, personal choice. Would rather talk to my guests or family while cooking rather than washing up (although presume you'll have a dishwasher). Also agree about it lining up better - sink opposite hob. That whole island would look better opposite the low height units (where the oven is).

I would have had all the tall units on that short wall (maybe with a dresser type one in the middle) and all low units on the other. No corner ones.

Thanks this really made me think!

I've just checked and I did a 17 unit Ikea kitchen for a friend at the end of 2016 and the units came to £3186. It was one of their more epxensive doors too. I purchased mirostone worktops separately from a trade supplier.

Another kitchen in 2011 was 13 units and £4000 including two ovens, microwave, dishwasher and hob.

    £8k is a lot.

Mea culpa - I was looking at the quotes absolutely wrong! Actually both IKEA and DIY come to about 5.5k for units only.

Still - it's the problem with the lack of transparency with the Wickes quote. Will need to spend a bit more time on it...

    Thank you for your responses.

This is the best pic I can find resembling yours. You'll see the wall of tall units. Obv you haven't got that corner wall bit jutting out inbetween the two, but you get the idea. Wouldn't it look odd having a low height anything to the left of those tall units? And the hob is on the island, and it seems to match up opposite the low units.

  • Just had mine installed it only a small one in my flat as need to move kitchen to another room as i built an exention on my house to make it 2 bedroom flat (Ground floor i had a garden)
I paid 2200 from B&Q (We kept all the applencies) but had to return £4oo worth of stuff as with ivory i could'nt see the point of end panels, And over ordered on worktop and tiles etc.
They wanted 3k for installtion. I needed old rip out and wall plastered as kitchen was being moved to another room. They would'nt do that.
So got my own fitters in and cost me 1600.
I went to wick and would'nt sell me their kitchen unless i used their fitters lol. Guess what i did!
Went some other companies but most would not hand over the design unless i paid a deposit! Very annoying as i need the design to be able to tell the fitters what and where stuff was going.

And this - although again not joined. But there's a block of tall units together. Nothing at the side.

Ah, yes. I noticed an awful lot of end panels - 13 or more base ends?

I hate the sheds for doing that. Work out how many you actually need.

Wickes quoted us £28K !!! , Ikea recently quoted a very similar one for under £12 k ( and they have a 25 guarantee)
Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later
  • I'm not sure when you posted this, but please don't use Wickes. We went through them as they appeared to be genuine, even when we said we had our own fitters, they managed to make us use theirs. I can't go into it, as I am devastated, but it you need to contact me I am on e.haven40@gmail.com
