Last month, British Gas needed to pay me some compensation and I just assumed it would be credited to my Santander bank account. But no, whilst I was keeping an eye on my Santander account it appeared in the old NatWest account. It's a good job I didn't close the account.

If you had closed it (by way of a transfer) then the funds would have been automatically redirected.

A Direct Debit is for outgoing payments only.

The company can pay funds into the same account using Direct Credit (BACS) or Faster Payment by way of the sort code/account number (in the Direct Debit mandate)
