Direct Debit - can i make it one-way only?

Hi, I have a Direct Debit set up with a company; they had taken £X per month; I have left said company and the (large) excess credit will be refunded at some time in the future. Can I prevent them taking any more money whilst leaving the Direct Debit there allowing them to pay me?

How have they said they will refund you?
BACS? Standing Order? Cheque?0 -

Just cancel the DD.0

I'd just cancel the DD, the company already have your account details and can make a payment by whatever method is available. I did just this with my previous energy supplier last month and the refund popped into my account one day with no fuss at all.0

Some of you may have guessed its Iresa. I'm well in credit and both energy transfers appear to have gone ahead. So cancelling DD now. Cheers.0

Some companies, eg Sky, BT, require you to leave the payment channel open until the account is settled. They take no more DDs (unless leaving is close to your billing date, when you pay and get a refund) but require the open channel as some customers owe them (eg for non-inclusive phone calls), though Sky have simplified leaving tv by forbidding separately billed items (like pay extra films/events), after cancellation, so fewer customers leave in arrears.0

Just out of interest, I used to pay British Gas from my NatWest bank account. Three years ago I moved this to Santander and cancelled the DD.
Last month, British Gas needed to pay me some compensation and I just assumed it would be credited to my Santander bank account. But no, whilst I was keeping an eye on my Santander account it appeared in the old NatWest account. It's a good job I didn't close the account.0 -
" Direct Debit - can i make it one-way only?"
No, because it already is.
Subject to your contractual commitments you can cancel whenever you like.0 -
when i last switched energy supplier the old supplier said to keep the dd active so that they could refund the credit balance. if i cancelled the dd they could only refund by cheque.0
