I really do think we need to look at debt as an illness, an addiction, same as alcohol, drugs, gambling. We call it LBM, they call it acceptance or admittance. Either way we can never recover, I think that's why we only post infrequently, we have to fight, and keep each other off the debt. Already i'm tempted, I need a new car, I need a holiday,,,,

debtbuster2014, as quickly as you can, add up all your debt...ALL of it, and post it here...date it and use that date as your LBM. The moment you start to recover.

No. 155 reporting in with an update.

I've been overpaying on a long term unsecured loan since January. After repaying all the credit cards and closing them down left 2 loans to repay. One is paid off this year which I can't overpay on and the final one runs along the mortgage, unsecured thankfully.

I've worked out an overpayment plan to pay it off in 2.5 years from now. All going well so far and the reduced interest from overpaying is bring the settlement total down which really helps.

I'll be back on here when I've paid it off and by that time that should be all debt bar the mortgage repaid and my long haul will be completed.

Good luck to every long hauler, it can be done as I showed myself, you need to stick at in through the tough times then there's some light at the end of the long haul tunnel chinking in.

Hi Debtbuster, yes my diary is called "When you're in a "Debt hole"..Stop Digging!" - it's an excellent cure for insommnia! lol :rotfl:. Hope you find it useful.

I've been on MSE since July 2009 but despite a few setbacks, slow progress is being made. OH started a new job last week, a permanent post with a local company, has boosted our morale as well as our bank balances...well it will do when she gets her first full salary.

Id love to join you. My dfd is august 2023. Im determined to reduce that massively but some months feels like im just standing on the spot. It would be great to hear how other long haulers stay motivated. Nine years is a ling time to live frugally!!

keep a running total and just try and get a minus sign in front of your debt balance every month, even a -1p is a success!

Im always looking at totals and paying off pennies so i have even numbers. That was a really good tip - its confirmed to me that pennies make pounds!

The long haul is hard and life does get in the way but as long as your slowly reducing it will all add up :-) x

Im feeling completely and utterly fed up. I know that each month im chipping away at the debt so eventually it will be gone but it isnt happening quick enough for my liking. I feel like im getting nowhere which is daft because ive cleared £2k so far so things are moving in the right direction. How can i perk myself up again? I go from being really motivated to really deflated - i cant seem to find the middle ground.
