Given the alternative nature of their investment process and resulting occasionally weird and wonderful price movements it's probably not suitable for use as a core holding. With modest amounts the price movements seem less significant whatever strategy you follow.

Is this offer like to come up again?
I know it was mentioned that similar offers have been used a couple times

No idea but historically they have done the £100 offer starting around September, January and March but they didn't do it this September for whatever reason.. The viability of the offer will depend on their retention rate after 12 months and if they see retained customers further invest above the minimum contribution. I hope they run it in March/April as we have another baby on the way.

The 'fee free' units on the Junior ISA for contributions or transfers occuring in the first 12 months is an ongoing offer however the lack of performance fee/refund mechanism makes those units particularly volaitle.

Does anyone plan to stay with Orbis beyond the bonus period?

Is there any reason for a newbie investor with current fairly modest amounts to choose Orbis over Vanguard, for instance?

Yes. I topped up during the Jan/Feb correction and now have about £600 in the balanced fund. I don't intend to sell it but will likely top up to £1000 at some point.

I hope it will compliment a Vanguard ISA quite nicely and I intend to have both eventually.

I started off for the £100 but it's been a good experience so I'm going to stick around. The performance has been disappointing but it's not entirely unexpected given their strategy. I'm happy to give it another year.

Yep - I set up a standing order to push 150 (equally across their two funds) and it's been entertaining watching the ups and downs in this very short timescale.

Personally yes, since I like their approach to investment as well as their charging model.

Why choose them over Vanguard? Well, that depends on whether or not you believe that active management delivers benefits...

a very basic check using the performance charts on Citywire would suggest the balanced fund is doing ok so could be worth sticking with for a bit
  • I plan to stick until the end of Feb to get whatever extra tiddly bit they are planning to include. I may then withdraw and add it to my other savings. Investing in stocks was always against my plans, but it looked like a good return. I am putting together a house deposit, so I don't *really* want stocks right now, but that is no reflection on Orbis. Will update with how the withdrawal goes so others can see timescales etc.

Do they let you know when their bonus is permanent? I'm just over the year but have had nothing conforming it.

No it's just based on 12 months from when the money was put in the fund. You should be able to see that date by moving your mouse over the graph on the account page.

Although you can withdraw from the fund after 12 months you cannot close the account until the circa 5% fund distribution has occurred (which may be automatically invested depending on your account settings) which will be by 28th Feb.
