Hello all.
Could anyone tell me is Hammerite paint will work well on radiators. I have some left and I don't want to pay loads for radiator enamel if I can help it.
Thanks
Ian

I would have thought Hammerite would have been fine.
Must admit I always key radiators with a light sanding then paint with the same emulsion as the walls so that they blend in...Piggypoints - 207+£10 * Quidco - £95 * Tesco - 1095 * Sainsbugs - 4237I SHALL be debt free!!!!!:D

Hi,
Lots of people just use Gloss, but If at all posible do not paint them. You never seem to get such a good finish.0 -
I have always used ordinary emulsion on mine ,always seems to work well and last for years.Moneysaving? - I cant stop spending because of this site!0

hammerite will be fine. any enamel paint will do.
gloss is ok most times. smells a bit for some while though.
make sure the rad is cold and let the paint dry first before turning on.Get some gorm.0 -
I really wouldn't use emulsion. The previous owner of our house painted some of the heating pipes with emulsion and it's all peeling off. If you want to match the colour of emulsion on the walls then get some oil-based paint mixed up.
I've never used hammerite or radiator enamel and would just use oil-based paint. I've used water-based quick dry satinwood paint before but find it much harder to get a decent finish on metal or wood as it dries so quick. If you look on the dulux website you'll find they recommend oil-based paint for rads.

I've successfully used hammerite. The original radiator paint had peeled right back to the metal. I tried another paint (i think it was a primer) but got rust patches with it. Hammerite worked very well.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. I use hammerite radiator paint,it keeps it's colour for years(white stays white) and copes with the heat.It just does'nt seem to budge and is worth a little extra.Don't use Ronseal,I did and had to re do mine it peeled off after a certain heat and scratched off easily.0

Hi All.
How do you prepare radiators before applying hammerite and what type of hammerite do you use (also does it come in a spray can?) any advise on best ways to apply?
As you can tell, I am a real numbtie where DIY is concerned! but live in a old property and have plenty of jobs that need doing - so must bite the bullet and start getting down to some of them.
My old radiators have rust spots on them - so I reckon painting these is a pretty high priority?!!Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0 -
I had rust spots too!
I washed it down with a sugar soap solution, dried it off well, rubbed it with kitchen towels and painted it.
I bought my Hammerite in Halfords, so I guess its the one meant for cars!
I used a brush not spray, spray will cover the walls if your a numptie like me.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards.
