Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, as you know every time you flush the toilet you are wasting gallons of water, a useful tip is to fill a plastic bottle with water and put it inside the tank, so you have less water in it .

This comes up time and again - hippo bags, house brick etc etc.
It seems to me that we all assume that those firms that manufacture flush toilets are unaware of the need to conserve water supplies.
It might be OK to reduce the capacity of the tank for use after certain bodily functions but(how shall I put it) it doesn't work all the time. At my place of work all toilets were 'modified' and after complaints the modification(a brick) was removed.Robert0 -
Interesting tips. Well, a particular housemate doesn't flush about 30% of the time so that's money saved. Her husband seems to be fine with it.I know nothing0

it's a battle between hygeine and conservation I suppose. Does anyone know whether the "half flush/full flush option" types make much of a difference as I'm quite tempted by them but suprised they are not more widely installed. I am in a new house and they're still being installed with the old handle type0

Almost all toilets in Australia have a Half/Full flush. Never had any problems, if you've misjudged with a Half, you can jump on it or the full. It does save a fair bit of money in the long run.I know nothing0

My downstairs loo seems to remove everything except the paper, so needs a second flush and thus defeats the object
.

Hi,
By all means add anything that cuts down the volume of water in cistern. Do not be suprised that folk then flush twice.
