No Savvy, no HGV. I can drive a 7.5 on grandfather rights. I always meant to get my Class 1, but always something else to do. When I retire maybe;)

Does that mean your granddad has to be in the cab with you, bugslet? :D

But hang on SOAS isn't in the Russell Group is it?

You're right, it isn't! They have a campus around Russell Square though, maybe that's the confusion :D

that was just when you were leaving Manxman :~)

Can't believe this thread is still going

I'm still chuckling at the notion of what a Russell Group uni education creates in a person (and yes I have one), and the demonstration here of what a public relations qualification does for well erm yeah ability to relate to the public

But hang on SOAS isn't in the Russell Group is it?

It would appear not. This is a list of the 24, but no mention of School of Oriental and African Studies.

As long as you hadn't read this thread;)

Not that should comment as I'm only in possession of a forklift license.:p.

bugslet - you are concrete proof of something a number of OPs on this board should remember.

Not having a degree does not mean someone is not intelligent. But more importantly, having a degree (or two or even three) does not necessarily mean that someone is intelligent. I know this because my wife constantly has to remind me!

Doesn't mean someone is employable either!

Incidentally, one of the academically highest qualified (and very intelligent) people I ever knew spent his whole working life as a 'bus driver. And he seemed to be perfectly happy and content with that choice. Good for him!

I'd assumed it was as one of the former University of London collegiate members. (I understand that they are all individual universities now and confer their own degrees. I know my LSE masters in 1983 was a University of London degree).

SOAS is obviously very specialised. When I was doing my LLM I knew many fellow students across several UoL colleges, but none from SOAS.

What a great thread. For the record my Masters came with Merit so some do come with classifications. Could have got a distinction but spent too much time failing to attract the ladies :) This must have been a troll thread surely?

Aw shucks Manx. And wiser to not argue with Lady Manx, leads to a more harmonious life.

I've known a few truckers with a couple of degrees, they prefer driving, it's simply a lifestyle choice.

I actually think that there is a place for media studies as an academic discipline. I'm sure that you (like me and many other posters here) are well aware of the bias represented in many media outlets. Anything that helps consumers of the media to understand that bias must be a good thing - so long as it's academically rigorous and unbiased itself!

Consumers of the media don't need three years of study to know that the media (like the humans that write it) is biased.

Everyone including your younger relatives is well aware that the media they consume is biased, in the same way that people are perfectly aware that Big Macs are full of crap. What nobody wants to admit in both cases is that this is exactly why they buy them.

If they want to study for three years, they should study something that helps them become less biased. Not wallow in it. Why spend three years studying something that you know is mostly rubbish?
