I have just installed the above box to work with my main tele now I have the old tivo box which contains many unwatched recordings and another tivo box coupled up to another tele in the bedroom this contains no recordings will it be ok to swap these boxes over without asking virgins permission

They should work fine swapped over within the same house.

You may be able to "link" the Tivo and the V6 boxes so they can share recordings, I know you can do it between V6's (and a friend has said it can be done with older TIVO's) as long as they're connected to the home network.
IIRC it's under my shows, at the bottom of the menu there is the option for "other TV boxes" which shows other TIVO's on your home network and lets you view content recorded on them.
