  • Check the immersion heater is not turned on, it could be faulty & overheating , then venting into the header tank.

I'd be checking the temperature of the water in my header tank

Yes if the water in the hot water tank boils it will overflow into the cold water tank in the loft which might explain why hot water is flowing into the toilet.

Surely the toilet will be on the rising main not the cold tank ??

OP do you mean hot water actually in the toilet, i.e. when you flush, hot water flows from the cistern into the pan OR do you mean hot water that should be cold water coming out of the cold tap into the basin that is in the room that you call the toilet?

Not necessarily: in 'ye olden days' the bathroom supply was often from the tank for the taps and toilet - that's why you get low and high pressure seats on ball valves.

With a hot water cylinder there should be a heating header tank in the loft and a cold supply tank. The heating, if over pumping should vent into the heating header tank and not the cold supply tank. I imagine that when working on the pipes someone has branched off the hot supply to the basin or bath for the toilet supply by mistake when they were supposed to branch off the cold feed. Toilet should be cold feed only. The water getting too hot is a separate issue, either set too high, a fault or something left on.
