Cheeky cost saving

I popped into Tesco yesterday to get some own brand 'value' plain yoghurt and 'value' tinned fruit: the yoghurt is dirt cheap, and means you can make your own varieties of yoghurts or those fruit-corner type things. Anyhow, while I was there I gave into temptation and bought one of those large fill-your-own salad pots for about £2.20. As I started to cram things into the pot (as you do), a little idea struck me.... .... if I jammed the pot full just of grated cheese it would be cheaper than buying a block of the stuff (depending on how compressed it was).
I know the saving isn't huge, but "every little helps". :rotfl:
I also couldn't stop myself from trying to work out how many of their boiled eggs would fit into the pot, or the baby tomatoes.

Nice one! I have thought of this one myself actually but never followed through. Not sure if I can face the look from the SA at checkout! They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0

or you could just not have cheese....
thus saving even more money lol.
however, one thing I have noticed in the hall is that in Asda, you can buy Asda value noodles (like super noodles but a tiny bit smaller) for a hefty price of.... 8p. Now i'm sure they taste like crap, but if you're ever stuck on money.
Asda also do 23p chocolate slaps which are pretty decent, im sure they're not fairtrade though....
I always just go around the shop looking for the cheapest stuff rele. But I have my limits, always buy free range eggs, those poor chickens!0 -
I used to live off potatoes, carrots and onions as the base foods, as they are so cheap! (mmmm, mash potato!). Ok, it gets a bit boring, but you can add other stuff
I guess food should be worked out in calories per £1 spent!! (i.e. the cheapest way to fill yourself up without getting scurvy!)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

Would you believe they don'tTo me they are no diffference in taste than supernoodles which are around 50p. I do think the salt content are pretty high so it's a snacking thing now and again. I remember when I was a student I was quite partial to those noodles, but they didn't rabbit on about salt either then :rotfl:

You've got me thinking now... I wonder if it would work having a flask of hot water, a packet of noodles, and then bang them all together at around lunch time? Or maybe just make some in advance and stick it in the flask. :rotfl:I have no signature.0

The asda noodles taste great they are thinner than the super noodles (btw i hate super noodles with a passion) but are really good if you cooking chinese at home. I reckon they are far healthier too based on the amount of sugar in the bachelors flavoring.0

......why not try them in stock/thin soup/veg.water/stock+added flavour(Soy? Vegemite?Marmite?etc.)in your Thermos.
It's so easy to boil any carcass/bones/similar leftovers with an onion/carrot/herbs - whatever you have, really - and then let it cool, strain and keep.
I freeze it in the self-same 500gm Value plain yogurt pots you spoke of.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

I tried the Tesco 8p noodles today (without putting the 'flavour' packet in), and they don't taste too bad as they are. Just need to find a few final ingredients to add to make a 15p lunch.
The thin soup idea sounds promising.
My experiments with value yoghurt have reached fruition: after buying a Muller fruit corner to gauge amounts involved, I can now make 4 of them out of a 500g value pot of yoghurt, with a variety of scrummy 'corners'! (except beer) Price works out at 10p each. :jI have no signature.0 -
Good for you - hope you are able to hover when reductions are being done, too. Meat cheese, f.and v. - every little etcetera..........CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

I used to always go to supermarkets just before the closed because that was when all the discounted stuff appeared. My local ASDA used to make far too many in house curries, so I used to pick up about 5 different freshly prepared curries for about a fiver, I would eat one for dinner and freeze the others hehe.0
