How to make a Roman blind

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any instructions or know of any websites on how to make roman blinds to fit the recess of a window??

I’ve never made one before so would need some detailed instructions with pictures ideally. Just worked out the cost of buying them ready made and it has shocked me!! So thought I’d give it a go and make them myself..:

Thanks x

Are you of an age for the U3A? They might run a soft furnishings class locally. That's how my mum learned to make them.

I've always thought the answer to how to make a Roman blind, was to poke them in the eye with a stick :D

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Damn! You beat me to it. :rotfl:

OP - I think this might be better asked on the Old-Style board or possibly Crafting.

Have you Googled it? I'd be surprised if there wasn't something on YouTube.

ETA - a quick Google shows there is.

Have you tried Google? I know tutorials for making Roman blinds are out there because I've considered making one myself and had a look.

No idea if this is any good or not, but it looks promising:

There are other videos on there too.

I do lots of needle crafts and youtube is the place I head to first.

Also how wide is your window? If you need more than one fabric width across then you may need to learn how to join and match fabrics which makes it slightly more complicated, but is still doable.

    Thanks all

I!!!8217;ve already done a google search but I can!!!8217;t always follow their instructions. I!!!8217;m a complete novice so would need an !!!8216;idiot!!!8217; type of guide.

I!!!8217;ve thought about going on a course but I!!!8217;m a stay at home mum so unless my other half takes time off work my only option is to learn from home...

Are there any books that anyone can recommended??

The best website I!!!8217;ve come across is this one:

    http://www.christinemartin.co.uk/how-to-make-a-roman-blind/

It talks about !!!8220;banding fabric!!!8221;...does anyone know what this is, what it looks like and what it!!!8217;s used for??

    Thanks xx

the max width of the window is 180cm. Hadn!!!8217;t considered that I would need to join fabrics together.

My plan was to start small though and make a blind for the downstairs toilet...
  • I made one years ago. I did it using book from the library about making blinds.

Not sure how well the blind would still fold if you are piecing together material. Could you make two instead?
