but asda wont take the memory card back if ive opened the packaging!

If you bought an SD card from ASDA, take it back and get your money back as I almost guarantee that you can get it cheaper online!

    look at play.com

you can get a 2Gb Maxell SD card for £9.49 (free postage)

it says in the manual that fuji memory cards are best used or is this just a marketing stunt so you buy theirs?

Of course it's a marketing stunt

In my casio Exilim, I use play.com (branded) 4Gb SDHC cards and a 2Gb Integral SD card, and another brand of 1Gb card without any problems whatsoever.

Yes the movie mode will work with either type of card although the SDHC (high capacity) cards will allow a longer recording time.
so are the SD cards better than the XD cards

SD and XD are different, you can't really say that one is 'better'.

A word of warning SDHC are similar to SD but Higher Capacity (hence the HC), if your camera does not say it takes SDHC the chances are it won't work with it. Best to check first. But if it takes SDHC then it will take SD no problem

No, but you may find a better deal on them as they are more common. Having both slots allows the choice of different types of card to be used and some users already have card readers/picture frames etc. xD was a joint venture design by Olympus and Fuji. See some price comparisons here.

Yes I agree, SD cards are more common, so generally they are cheaper.
