Missed flights due to snow on roads

Any rail options? It would help if you could say where in N Scotland you are travelling from

Yes but I suspect that may not be an option. We've had so many trains cancelled locally I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if it's better in the Highlands. Also, as you say, the chances are they may be nowhere near a station.
  • Oh thanks everyone for taking the time. I've been all over the Scotrail website (nightmare!) and Inverness trains terminating at Perth, none going on to Ed. They 'cannot give out information' about tomorrow, which kind of leaves me stuck. We are close to A9 and I don't think it is a bother to Perth but afterwards could be hairy (mind you that may change overnight). Flying by the seat of my pants on this one (no pun intended).. Off to see if I can find the RBS insurance Ts & Cs.....
  • How were the tickets booked? Direct online, or via a travel agent (physical or online)? If via an agent, you will need to go back through the agent to get the tickets changed. If direct, don't bother with the European number, phone Qatar direct on +974 4022 6000 as they have longer opening hours. What class of ticket did you book (we know it was business class, but what type of business class... lowest possible fair, fully flexible?). If a flexible ticket, get rebooked on to another flight ASAP - but be quick, as there are likely lots of people changing their flight plans at the moment. If the flight isn't flexible, it _might_ be fully refundable. Discuss with Qatar or your agent. But sooner rather than later. To phone Qatar, use a VOIP app (e.g. Skype), to keep your phone call cost to a minimum.

I was wondering why anyone would fly from Edinburgh to Perth by an international airline when it is only a few miles up the A9. Then I suddenly realised the flight is to Perth WA.

    Just getting old!!
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I'm not sure that Perth, Scotland airport could cope with anything much bigger than a Cessna!

Did you speak to the UK Reservations team at Qatar to find out whether they are offering any flexibility in light of the storm? Even if your ticket doesn't offer flexibility, they may be offering a free transfer to other available flights given the circumstances. It's definitely worth a call to see what their position is!

From their website, the contact details are:
    Tel : 0330 024 0125 (Open Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-5pm)

Sorry I couldn't get back to you earlier.

Probably too late now but Inverness to Aberdeen was running, and I believe it was also possible to do Aberdeen to Edinburgh via Dundee a few direct, some change at Dundee, same route today is running.

    Out of interest, what happened?
  • Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your help. Us mad Highlanders went for it. I was up at 5am digging my car out of the garage...took just over an hour. Local farmer hoofed by and threw up a 4ft wall blocking my drive...not too bad, as he had cleared the road a bit. The mile to my parent's was 'interesting' and car had to be abandoned at the end of their road. Don't know if you have ever carried x2 heavy suitcases over 3ft drifts for 500yds but not easy! Once ensconced in car, it was about 2 miles of snowy roads with black bits, so fine....then the A9 was clear, black top all the way, hurrah. met a dribble of snow at Aviemore and Pitlochry but nothing to write home about. Slightly scary high drifts suddenly appeared on dual carriageway on the inside lane which proved challenging as the usual nutters belted by at 80 in the outside lane.

Made it to Edinburgh, stayed at hotel, drank a LOT of wine...shoved parents on plane the next day. They are currently basking in 32 degs...saying it is 'very warm'...I ask you!

    Thanks again.

PS Made it back up and had to dig out the pigging garage again as plough had chucked snow all over it.
