INR seller says its returned by RM no letter left

As the title. I bought a 99p item recently, postage was expensive for what it was but needed the item urgently.
Item did not turn up, I contacted the seller who said it had been posted.
Fast forward a couple of weeks I contact the seller to request a refund as not received. They replied the item had been returned to them that day and if I wanted it I would need to pay the postage again.
Now I never received a letter from RM to collect the item and given the size I did not expect to have to collect it from the PO.
So where do I stand, I didn't receive it so should get a refund or else have it sent out again.
TIA

Open a case for INR - let the seller argue the toss with Royal Mail. Get your refund and then order again, preferably from a different seller!

You might want to ask for the tracking number first. You can say so it is you can discuss it with Royal Mail. As if it really has been returned to them, you open a case and they upload the tracking number. You may end up with no item and no refund. They could just be trying it on and will lose a INR as there is no tracking.

Seems unlikely to be tracked if the item only cost 99p, but if it was, then tracking would show it was returned to sender - and an INR would surely succeed because proof of attempted delivery, rather than actual delivery, isn't enough for the seller to win a case?

Thanks for the replies, it's more than 30 days so can't get a refund and seller wants me to pay for postage again. The seller was very slow to reply, I wonder if delaying to after 30 days. Anything else I can try?

You can open a case up to 30 days from the last estimated delivery time given by eBay. If it's beyond that I'm surprised you didn't open one previously, was there any reason why you didn't?

As above though, you still have the PayPal route, but just get it opened and stop messing around waiting for the seller to do something to help.

I had contacted the seller and was waiting for a reply. That's why I said I wondered if they'd held off replying to me. Will open dispute through PP now. Thanks

30 days is along time to wait. Thankfully you have 180 days on Paypal.

Open the case, escalate it as soon as you can.

Buy elsewhere and take a mental note that eBay give you 30 days for case opening. With NR it will be the same outcome but with SNAD, you get a prepaid returns label on eBay.

That was a waste of time. PayPal found in the seller's favour. I never had an opportunity to put forward my point to paypal, it says in the resolution centre that the bueyr escalated the claim. This is incorrect..
The item was returned to them yet I don't have the item and have lost my money. Not happy at all.
    How is that fair???
