Problems with installing a woodburner

We have converted a long, low stable block with a flat roof to a house. The heating is by a solid fuel Rayburn which is great. However, this has the most enormous, ugly, factory chimney. I think the only reason our miserable NIMBY neighbours have not moaned about it is that they cannot really see it.
With the Rayburn we got a free woodburner which I want to install in the living room. The 3 guys who have quoted have all said it needs another huge chimney which must rise at least 2 metres above the roof. I am concerned that this will be unsupported for a lot of its length and it is windy where we live. It will also be closer to our neighbours so that will cause problems. We will also need to apply for planning which is £400. The quotes are all around £2,200.
Also I have started to tile the wall behind where it will go with these fancy split marble tiles. The installers have said I will need to take these off and take away the plasterboard wall, which will be a real pain in the a**e. This free fire is starting to look like a nuisance!
With all these problems I was thinking of just putting the woodburner there and having a photo of flames in the glass window. Then I saw a thing about bio ethanol stoves. I could buy one for less than £400, which would be a huge saving, but reading some postings on here about them the general view was that they are expensive to run and do not give off much heat.
Has anyone got any experience of these stoves or any other ideas what we can do. There is already a radiator in the room so I do not really need much heat, I just want to have a focus and as I have laid the hearth already it will look stupid without anything there. We are not connected to gas and I do not want an electric fire as they are really expensive to run.
