Flaxseed doesn't help me at all, I add two tablespoons to my breakfast each morning.

I'm 45 and my body's thermostat has a life of it's own! I haven't tried any supplements or anything. So i've got no good advice to offer - sorry.

My periods are getting more irregular and unpredicatable. I've just 'come on' after a 3 month gap and I'm a bit annoyed as I was hoping that was it and all over now - no such luck. I've had 4 periods this year but the first 3 were all in the space of 6 weeks in April/May!

Try putting your usual amount on some digital scales to see if it's enough. The trial I quoted used 40 g daily. (I think they would have to be 2 very heaped tablespoons or 4 level ones) But bear in mind it was a small trial and The frequency of hot flashes decreased 50 percent over six weeks, and the overall hot flash score decreased an average 57 percent for the women who completed the trial so it certainly isn't a 100% cure rate.

Just thought are you grinding them?
The reason for the grinder link was because if you don't grind them (or at least a quick whizz to break the skins) they can simply pass through the system totally untouched.

Still Flaxseeds are one of the world's healthiest foods and will certainly be helping your health in many other ways.

I guess one of the good things is that I have just missed a whole month of periods, also didn't get the usual pmt(mad cow disease)! Also I mentioned that I did try taking cider vinegar in water. It hasn't helped the hot flushes but it has done wonders for my digestion, water retention. I have lost about half a stone, and feel really good.

What ratio of vinegar to water do you use and how often do you drink it?

I have been taking YMEA tablets which I find fantastic. I really notice if I forget to take them one day. My friend swears by a Ladycare magnet.

DH has been having sweats for quite a while now. At night he finds the best thing to do is get up, dry himself off, then come back to bed as soon as the sweat's stopped pouring off him (and I do mean POURING off him!) and listen to the radio.

Tried a chillow, not that impressed. but his sweats don't seem to be temperature related, if that makes sense ...

    Hi,

I have been taking 2 tsp's in half pint of water 4 or 5 times a day. It doesn't seem to have done anything for the flushes, but it makes you wee so much! It seems to be eliminating toxins and stuff from my body, probably giving my kidneys a real good detox and as a result my eyes are sparkling, skin looks great and I don't have any bloating or water retention that i usually have!:j

I'm amazed that no-one has mentioend the Linda Kearns menopause cake yet - this is excellent, and really does work. Linda Kearns has developed a recipe that contains loads of natural phyto-oestrogens to help the symptoms of menopause.

You can either buy the cake itself, or for money savers you can get the recipe and bake it yourself too, see the link here:

    http://www.bake-it.com/wellfoods/index.html

I thouroughly recommend it - the date and walnut variety is lovely by the way!

    Hope this helps someone.....

    robster,

I have been suffering like you since , I was 39, I was thrown into 'perimenopause' when I stopped taking the pill, the estrogen dropped and voila, you have the hot flushes. I was literally driven mad, by the them and had alot of other symtoms to, including, anxiety, insomina and tiredness.

I went to the gp and he said I was to young!! He didn't offer any comfort or support at all. Out of desperation, I went to local family planning clinic, where I met the most amazing gp, she is a specialist in gyn things, she told me that I was in perimenopause, you can develop the symtoms, 10 years before the onset of true menopause  She recommeded the yasmin pill, as I was having horrendous pmt as well, as everything else. You can get this pill on prescription from gp, but they may try to put you off, as it costs them more than the ordinary pill.

I have learnt a massive amount about perimenopause, since, I am now 44 and still taking the yasmin and thankfully, not suffering at all!!

pm me if you want more details about yasmin;)

I also go on www.powersurge.com forums, where the ladies on the forum, know everything about peri!!

  • I've been in peri now for about 2 years (I'm 44) and last year the night sweats were making my life miserable, no heating on until hubby came home from work, I would open the bedroom window even though there was frost on the floor - you know the sort of thing! I went to my docs and we both decided that HRT wasn't the way forward, but he suggested prozac even though I wasn't depressed and only mildly wanting to kill everyone around me (their fault - obviously not mine!).

Apparently one of the side effects is that it reduces somethiing that causes night sweats and hot flashes. I've been on it about 10 months now and I think it is wonderful!! The night sweats have completely gone (after about 6 weeks) and I only have the odd hot flash. In fact I'm sitting here now thinking about putting the heating on for the winter - something that certainly wouldn't have happened last year. I know that lots of people have a negative view of prozac but in my case it's been a wonder drug, whether it would work the same way in someone who needed it for depression I don't know, but it's an option worth considering. Good luck
