Hello everyone, I'm at work now so can't take readings at the moment. But from the actual readings, my friend worked out the following:

    Gas

    Apr: 4874
    Dec: 6878

    = 2004 x 12.149p/kWh = £243.46 (for 8 months)

    + 4 months est £81.15 = £324.61

    + standing charge £67.82/year = £392.43

    Electric

    Apr: 5245
    Dec: 7721
    = 2476 x 2.748p/kWh = £68.83 (for 8 months)

    + 4 months est £22.94 = £91.77

    + standing charge £75.37/year = £167.14

    £392.43 + £167.14 = £559.57 for the year

    = £46 per month

    This look about right?

The meter reading for gas is not kWhs, and don!!!8217;t forget the VAT if it isn!!!8217;t included in the standing and unit charges.

If your gas meter is metric then your 2000 or so has to be multiplied by c.11.22

And your unit charges are incorrect; ie, the wrong way round. Nobody pays 12p/kWh for gas.

  • Sorry, yes they are the wrong way around. These are based off the rates of the bill in kWh.

They haven!!!8217;t taken into account dual fuel discount etc, but £57 still seems roughly ok?
  • ELECTRIC:
    Unit Rate . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .12.149p/kWh

    GAS

    Unit Rate . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2.748p/kWh

    Gas

    Apr: 4874
    Dec: 6878

    = 2004 x 2.748p/kWh = £55.07 (for 8 months)

    + 4 months est £18.35 = £73.42

    + standing charge £67.82/year = £214.67

    Electric

    Apr: 5245
    Dec: 7721
    = 2476 x 12.149p/kWh = £300.81 (for 8 months)

    + 4 months est £100.27 = £401.08

    + standing charge £75.37/year = £476.45

    £214.67 + £476.45= £691.12 for the year

    = £57.60 per month
  • has has been said above the gas figure on your metre is not KWH, just units used, probably M3

    therefore your gas KWH is 2004 x 11.2 x 0.02748p = £617, plus you standing order of 68/12 x 8 = £45

    therefore gas consumption total is 617 + 45 = £662

your gas kWh units is very high at 22444 kWh, and that's only including half of the winter. something is not correct there

Hello everyone, I'm at work now so can't take readings at the moment.
A quick pic of the gas meter should sort this out. Perhaps the readings are out by a factor of 10...who knows... (if you cannot post pictures yet, email it to me - see Private Messages. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/private.php )

I think I can see where the problem is - it has actually already been mentioned.

Your meter reading for gas is probably not in kwh, but more likely in cubic metres and it therefore needs converting (confusing, I know). Your meter reading of 2004 m3 is something like 22486 kwh = £616 + standing charge + VAT.

Sorry, I think that might account for your £600 discrepancy. I'm not at my desk, just using my tablet, so it is more tricky to post and scroll to see earlier posts, but I'll check more carefully later (and it keeps correcting my typing).

Sorry mr_accountant, you were obviously faster working it out and typing than me! Delighted that we got the same answer though. :D
  • Does that mean I'm using too much gas or they have it wrong do you think? They've come back to me and just duplicated the £600 bill I now owe :(

Don't panic (yet). Email me a pic TODAY of your gas meter and I'll post here. (don't think you can post pics as a new forum member).
