BG smart meter

I apologise if this has already been covered elsewhere.

I've just recently signed up for a BG fixed tarrif (twice actually, like to keep up with the savings) I noticed within the sign up process that I had to agree to a smart meter installation by a certain date.
Can this be enforced ( I didn't think so), as I certainly don't want one until they become reliably standardised.
Especially as I don't want a useless hunk of plastic if I change supplier again.
Thoughts ??

If the ts and cs of that specific tariff say you must go smart ,then I think you have agreed to have smart meters. Game over!!
  • Oh dear, by signing up to this tariff you have agreed to have the useless hunk of plastic installed as it is a condition of this tariff.

You could have no doubt found a much better deal elsewhere without the need for a nice but dim meter!
  • You probably have a cooling off period in which to change mind with new contract, so take advantage, and choose a cheaper supplier without the Smart meter requirement.

There is no cooling off period associated with a tariff change. It is treated as a mutual variation of contract.

Thanks for your responses. I'm probably not as bothered as perhaps my post implied. It's just that somewhere I read it can't legally be enforced to have a smart meter. Probably on here.

At the end of the day I will just delay installation until the very last minute.

I certainly won't change supplier because of this. It's the cheapest deal of the big suppliers. I've tried the small companies, they are not worth the hassle for the saving I'm making on this tarrif.
  • Just don`t answer the door if a meter fitter turns up
.So long as you do not refuse access then you are not breaching the terms. They will go away and try 3 months later.
If you have outside boxes they can t fit them until you are present. You will be out of contract and ready for another switch by the time a meter fitter catches you at home.

Not that I intend to, but i think there is a cooling off period. Perhaps be good if someone could confirm this, for the sake of other readers.

Just done my own research, below is a cut and paste from an OFGEM document.

    2. Summary of the Regulation
2.1. The Regulations provide for a 14 calendar day cooling off period for gas and
    electricity consumers4
. This cooling off period cannot be waived.

Not if it is a tariff change with your existing supplier. Standard Licence Condition 23A.5 applies. You are already under contract if the 14 day period from your first application to switch has passed.

Why? They're going to fit one anyway so why delay at all?
