We stayed on Kowloon. One advantage is that you have views to HK island!
We also went to Macau. Check carefully where you stay, the free buses are great for getting to the hotels but a lot of hotels are a distance away from the centre of Macau, so useless if your purpose is to see the centre.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. No, that's why I'm just going to HK as there's no visa needed for that. Although it's on my list just in case I ever become non MSE.
As far as I can make out the 5 day visa is CNY 314 (£36) so it's not massively expensive in comparison to the standard Chinese visa. If you like the idea of visiting mainland China and just want a taste it's not a terrible option although you wouldn't be able to go far.0 -
Thanks Baz, got that all down in my notes.
Thanks Ste, looks rather overwhelming!!! But very useful, I've sent it to my notes on my phone.
I think I might stay at the Ibis on HK Island, & the Dorett in Kowloon. Still undecided about Macau, & the beach though.
I'd say that Macau is worth the trip being as you've got a fair amount of time in HK. You could possibly do it all in a day depending on the ferry times but an overnight stay would make it less of a rush.
I find casinos quite boring after a short time but they're worth a visit for half an hour.0 -
I remember a long time ago in Macau when there was only the Lisboa casino.
You could go in and watch a lot of games.
The chinese gambling games were 'fun'. You'd get a guy who has just come across the border with all his village's savings. A stack of old soiled RMBs maybe 4 inches thick.
He'd put it all on one bet. Invariably lose. Just get up and walk out. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Mmmm I'm becoming drawn to Kowloon more so.
We definitely wont be going to any casino.
That's good to know & cheap Ballard.
Thanks all.0 -
I stayed in the T hotel
Amazing place it's a training hotel run by the tourist board so everything is done to perfection or as close to, you are really looked after plus the view is amazing.
Bus stop right outside so easy access to everywhere.
Rooms around 50 to 70 a night for 4 star

I booked the T Hotel for 5 nights, thanks again. Topcashback were giving 13% off, plus I found a code for another 12%, & my Ebookers bonus of about £12. So I'm quite pleased with myself. This'll give us a bit of peace & quiet before we hit central HK.
Also booked The Dorsett, Monkok for 4 nights.
I'm just looking at a nice beach one to finish off now, can't decide.0 -
Hi,
We're off to HK for a few days on our way to New Zealand. We're staying in Kowloon. I'm planning on a day trip going to Lamma Island as it looks like a nice break away from the busy city.
Hope you have a lovely time!0 -
Sounds great, you too, thanks! I was planning on staying on Lamma Island but decided against it, but I'll certainly be visiting too.
Have you been to NZ before? I went in November 2016 on the Hot UK Deal £342 flights. I've got loads of family there, some I'd never met so I had the time of my life!!!!
Finally for my 3rd hotel, I choose to stay at the iclub Ma Tau Wai. They have free breakfast, & 24/7 drinks. Someone mentioned wine too on TA, I do hope so.
Now I'm excitedly looking at stuff to do, feeling confused about how to get around, & am very, very, afraid of how much food will cost
Any further tips will be gratefully received, thanks.0
