Hong Kong ...

Options
holiday help please. I did find an old closed thread on this & have read up on it.

So far I've only booked the flights, & am now looking for hotel area help. Being MSE I don't really want to pay those prices to stay on Hong Kong Island, but everything on TripAdvisor is screaming at me to do just that. I'm there for 14 nights, so there's no rush. I quite like the Ibis HK central Sheung Wan, but wouldn't want to spend the whole trip there. I'm also keen to spend maybe a couple of nights in Macau. I love the idea of the free casino buses being MSE. For a bit of peace & quiet in all of this I'd like to spend some time at Silvermine Bay too, or a nice beach area.

What's everyone think? All ideas gratefully received :D

Does it have to be a hotel

    Have you looked at Airbnb?

    No not a hotel blindman.

Yes, I shall take another look though for cheaper area other than HK island.

    Thanks.

I stayed somewhere up Nathan Road which was about 3 stops on the tube from the harbour but unfortunately I can't recall the name of the place at the moment but it was reasonably priced. I would suggest that you look slightly further out.

Unless you really like casinos then a couple of nights would be plenty in Macau. I thought that the casino buses only go from the Chinese border to the casinos and back. I suppose that they're also likely to go from the ferry port but I wouldn't have thought that they'd do much else.

For peace & quiet I'd recommend a trip to the big Buddha. The cable car ride there is stunning (although expect to queue for it).
  • I stayed in Kowloon and would recommend that over staying in Hong Kong island (we spent one day on the island, that's it!).

There was more to see and eat in Kowloon (I love those fish ball things!).

We stayed here which was nice (rooms are small, it's Hong Kong!): http://www.silkahotels.com/westkowloon/

2 nights in Macau would probably be more than enough, it's a nice place, but there isn't really anything to see or do in the casino section unless you like gambling (it's nothing like Vegas!)

I also spent a couple of days in HK as a stopover and stayed on HK Island. The hotel (that someone else) booked was near the racecourse but there was little else there and we trekked to Kowloon both nights.

Due to very some minor works on the hotel at the time we had a free tab at a sister hotel's bar which made up for it.

If you fancy time on the beach, check out the islands. Silvermine bay is attractive, but the beach there is not very nice.

If you want to splurge, the YMCA with a harbour view is fantastic, but not MSE.

Do not miss a night at the Stable Bend Terrace at Happy Valley Race course.

Great fun and you can place your bets while enjoying your meal.

Triad mini bus, can't remember if they are green or red to Sai Kung and a sea food meal there. Catch the bus from outside Choi Hung MTR station.

Lamma Island by ferry from Central?

Front seats on top of double decker bus to Stanley. You won't need the Disney experience after that.

If you go to Macau make sure you try Fernando's Restaurant on Coloane at Hac Sa beach.
And go to the ruins of St Paul's Cathedral and then walk down hill past all the faux antique furniture shops and pop in one or two.
When you get down to the front then the egg tarts are good.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
  • I stayed in the T hotel

Amazing place it's a training hotel run by the tourist board so everything is done to perfection or as close to, you are really looked after plus the view is amazing.

Bus stop right outside so easy access to everywhere.

Rooms around 50 to 70 a night for 4 star

I visited HK as a young 19 year old sailor for few days in 1973. Accommodation was free courtesy of being onboard HMS TIGER. Had a few good 'Runs Ashore', still got the evidence on my arms.:o

I recall enjoying a place called Aberdeen, the views from the top of the cable-car, and the Tiger beer at the China Fleet Club.

    Happy days.:)

No we're not gamblers, but I was thinking more of getting collected off the ferry & straight on to the bus & being dropped off right by the hotel. Although perhaps not with our suitcases. I just fancied a look around at a few things & seeing the pandas, & felt that I couldn't do Hong Kong without going to Macau. There's always a day trip, but if I'm paying to go across for the day I might as well go for a few days.

We'll be looking a the giant Buddha, but not sure about the cable car as I'm scared of heights, but I'm sure MrDuke will have me up there given half the chance  Last time I did a cable car all you could hear on the video was me swearing in sheer terror :o

As for Silvermine Bay, I read somewhere that there was some sort of major construction going on. So I'll have to look for another beach I think.

Thanks everyone for all the tips on places to go & food to eat ... Very much appreciated.
