in Techie Stuff
Just swapped our ISP and been given a free Google Home.
I think the answer is to sell it on asap, but just to check we're not missing a beat here.
From looking on the box it can:-
Get questions answered - I'm quite happy to use my PC/Android phone to do this. My phone has 'OK Google' - I've never felt the need to try it. Mrs B has iPad - she's never used Siri
Get the music going - we already have a 'built in' music system in the house
Get Stuff Done (set alarms, add to shopping list) - no thanks
Get your smart home started - not interested thanks
Do we need to rearrange our lives to accommodate this free gift??

keep it. it can sing happy birthday to mrs b"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Check your contract as to when it becomes actually yours without charge .0

you either love or hate those sort of things - my oh has an amazon alexa thing and is always talking to it, making it do things like switch on lights "alexa ask hive to turn on bedroom light to 100%" and various other things, but I find it easier just to turn a light switch manually0

Just because there is a bandwagon, you don't need to jump on them to hear music :-)
Sell it while its new, and the bandwagons over the hill ...0 -
We were given an Amazon Dot/Alexa thing. We use it in two ways.....
1. to (quietly) play internet radio stations (bluetooth to main speakers). There are many other ways to do this, but it suits us.
2. to entertain visitors for 5 minutes or so.
Other than that, it's not used. It's a solution looking for a problem, but the novelty of the interface does make it an attractive purchase for many.0 -
Never say "Alan's Snackbar" when it can over-hear you...0

Get it on eBay.....they sell for £115 easily on buy it now,if you list it when eBay have a sell for £1 listing even better0

They make great radios and with the addition of a Chromecast audio to your existing music system, you will never have to buy another CD.
Great for asking questions that suddenly crop up, without having to fire up a browser.
We have 5 and fully use them, mainly for music, but since getting them have started automating lighting, the heating and most things on the TV and have plans for other stuff.
Of course if you don't want it, it's very saleable.
Amusing how many are so anti them.:DDrinking Rum before 10am makes you
A PIRATE

Thanks all - glad I'm not the only 'grumpy old !!!!!!' here!!! :rotfl:
I always remember the 'innovations catalogue' that used to drop out of the Sunday paper.
Someone (Which?) reviewed it and concluded that it contained solutions to problems that you weren't aware that you had!!
Looks like we may have a similar issue here!!0 -
