Laptop Stand v Cooling pad

  • Remember that Li-ion batteries do get 'warm' (and that can be 'hot' to many people) when in use.

Over time, dust can clog the air vents and fans and then it's the actual laptop which is heating up (i.e. not cooling efficiently). Using them on your lap a lot (or on a bed, as many do) can make this kind of problem worse because of the dust and also the fact that vents can be blocked even if they're not clogged up inside, thus restricting airflow.

What make of laptop is it? Does the BIOS have the facility to display CPU temperature? If so you can see if the CPU is running too hot or not.

Is it shutting down at all? If they're too hot through overheating they usually will.

I use a cheap plastic bread/cutting board, big enough to allow use of a mouse, on my lap with the laptop placed on that.
Seems to work well and no overheating issues and you can pick one up for a couple of pounds.

Great idea oldagetraveller. My household oblong lap tray works fine keeps machine cool too but because it has edges I struggle with my usb mouse, so will try your suggestion as no edges and large enough surface which extends beyond base of lappie to the side would swiftly solve this problem for me.........................Still sulking though!! Would love a 'Dave'!! I'm gonna scream and scream until I make myself sick! ...............pulls a mega pout!!!!!!!:p

Loved your comment pumpa, so true!...:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Ok, ive just been and got myself a Dave -:rotfl:

I looked at both the table and the lap cushion type and decided to go with the table although it is quite big i want to know i wont drop it and its flat etc.

 for the info and pointing me in its direction pasturesnew.

Tao81, i notice that someone is selling one on ebay but it is overpriced...wish id thought about it before and had the room i would have offered to get you one and send it but might cost a lot to post  as its heavy.

Fallingdownman, its a compaq presario f500.. hopefully the heat thing may improve once its off my knee. I have had a look via the task manager at the cpu usage etc but cant see anything about temp..
  • You need to tap F10 when booting the machine and it will go to the BIOS.

I'm not sure if there is a CPU temperature available in this BIOS, though. Worth a look - but don't be too worried just yet. Laptops do get warm when in use.

I want it just cos it's called Dave!!
Makes a change from the usual names Ikea think up for their stuff, like 'kilnge' and 'snokersharsenfaresnklag' etcetc :)
Did they run out of names?

Cue Douglas Rain/HAL9000 impression, "Good Morning, Dave".

My favourite IKEA name has to be the little wheeled trolley thing they called "Fartfull". Its not available any more, but it has been "replaced" with a light fitting called "Fartyg".

Anyway, the newer laptops with higher speed CPUs do seem to run a lot hotter than the older slower ones. If used on your lap, I shudder to think what they could be doing to your "love spuds" and sperm count!
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
