Bidder says I'm not connected to paypal

I've had an email from someone who says he has tried to bid but has got a message saying I'm not connected to paypal.

I can't see why this should be and wondered if this is a glitch at present or something I should be wary about and would appreciate any advice how to reply.

Really not a good idea. If that friend ever then uses the OPs internet or gets themselves 'connected' to the OP in any way it will look like a shill bid. Even though the possibility is remote we need to protect our accounts at all cost from eBay - who sometimes take a very hard line.

OP I assume you manage to sell normally otherwise with no hitches? If so then it's either a glitch or buyer has been blocked due to one of your seller requirements and has misunderstood the message.the one thing I would just do though is double check the listing has the correct PayPal Id added.

I really think people worry to much. The stories people tell at work and I don't know any that have had any issues. I am not talking about fraud. Really its no big deal..........Ebay have bigger things on their mind...it goes without saying to not ask your brother or sister, mum or dad who live in the same house on the same internet.

If you feel that way, that's fine. However, eBay have (certainly in the last 12 months of so) really clamped down, to the extent people are being restricted or even banned for very little, and with no hope of appeal.

Back to the OP, it sounds like he/she has a site preference in place to block bidders without a PayPal account on file.

You can check it here http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences it is the top option.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have just had someone pay for another item with no problems and the Paypal ID for the listing there is a query about seems fine.

So I presume this is either a glitch or there is some reason the potential bidder is being blocked so I'll just leave things as they are and see if anyone else bids on it.

Will it cause any problems if I reply to the chap via ebay and apologise but say I can't see why he can't bid?
  • Sorry to come back again but I just noticed I cross-posted with one from theonlywayisup saying I might have a block on bidders with no Paypal account on file and on checking I have.

I notice I can allow a bidder in this position as a one-off but wondered if it is best to keep this block in place (as presumably I put it there for a reason).

I feel that way because its my experience and nearly everyone I know. Appeal??.......why bother. You make a bid and then retract it, job done and no drama. Life really is not that complicated.

Back to the OP..........if in doubt do nothing. What's the loss of the odd bidder to remain safe.

Ohh and I read Ebay are soon to depart with PayPal services anyway..

Having perused this sub forum and read loads of the threads, this is very sound advice to the OP.

To the OP, as you've established your Paypal account is working and accepting payments why expose yourself to risk by messaging the potential buyer - it might be caught by the ebay bots as trying to sell off site and get yourself suspended.

It's entirely up to you. Personally I would allow their bid as they have contacted you to say there was an issue. It's less likely a bot/scammer would contact you if they are randomly bidding on items and don't have the Paypal account attached. As a seller it's just one small way of preventing the basic registered bidders away.

    You misunderstand.

This isn't about making the bid and removing it - the contact then is already made and eBay are linking at the most tenuous opportunity.

It isn't about how many people you know or not that have experienced anything, the fact of the matter is, eBay have and are continuing to clamp down. But if you don't want to believe it, that's absolutely fine. My post was not to disagree with you but to highlight to other people reading the thread that your opinion isn't the stance eBay are taking at the moment.
