The point i was trying to make is my phone is far more secure than my laptop simply because it has the latest technology compared to my old laptop, i change my phone yearly-18mths hence it has far more security features than my 10yr old laptop, most people keep their laptop until it gives up and do not update software often enough to keep it safe.0

Well everybody is of course entitled to their opinion but I would only point out that there have been zero and I mean zero cases of an app being hacked on a Phone compared with the numerous number of people who have had their banking details compromised whilst using a desktop browser over the years
etc.
The real point is that is hasn't happened yet. And that's probably because there are vastly greater pickings for the criminals by targeting desktop browser access at the moment. But if banks continue to push people in the direction of apps it will soon become viable for them to be targeted too, and if you think there aren't clever people out there who will be able to find a way to achieve it then you're ignoring the lesson of what's happened in the past.0 -
Talking of security and Nationwide's site, I've noticed that although the number from which it asks for three characters when I log in is nine digits long I'm NEVER asked for digits 7,8 or 9.
I think Which? did an assessment of the security of different banks' online offerings and Nationwide came out kind of half way partly because you can click "back" in your browser and it goes back into the secure bit of the site.0 -

That's really poor - it's really not hard for the developers to code it up so that it's impossible to go back after logging out as the session should be destroyed.
This is a particularly poor situation when logging into Online Banking via a shared browser as many people don't realise that when closing a tab, if the session remains open (because clicking 'Logout' doesn't end it), then it's a doddle to re-open the tab and be straight back into the bank account simply by clicking ctrl+shift+T. Imagine finding that you've just checked your bank account in a library only for somebody to show up after you've left, re-open the browser, click ctrl+shift+T and instantly bring up your details!!
Additionally, it doesn't sound like their random function is working correctly if you're never prompted for any characters after the sixth one - this looks like quite an oversight.Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000

Mine is only 6 digits too, it was assigned to me by Nationwide when I signed up to online banking (many years ago). Are you absolutely sure that yours is 9 digits? Was it also assigned by Nationwide? If it was then not selecting from all the available digits is pretty poor.0 -

Are you sure you're not mixing up your memorable data and passnumber?
Your Nationwide passnumber is 6 digits... Hence it never asks for 7, 8 or 9... :T0 -
My Nationwide pass number is only 6 digits too. As far as I know, everybody's pass number is 6 digits.0
