It's incredibly rare for them to contact your doctors at all. Hopefully you sent evidence with your form?

Almost everyone has to have a face to face assessment, don't let it worry you too much. Also remember that if you're reading horror stories online about bad assessments that no-one posts their positive experiences so you get a skewed view of reality.

    Good luck.

  • Oh that's fine then I just sent copy of my CVI because I have retinitis pigmantosa and registered blind. Don't go doctors or anything because they told me there is nothing they can do. The consultant at the time just said you are blind there is no cure so you are discharged. So, that what I have been doing.

Hopefully that will be straightforward then. Did you give detailed answers on the form about why being blind means you meet the descriptors?

  • the DWP themselves on two separate occasions told me they dont contact them so you need to provide and take with you as MUCH evidence as possible. Its incredibly rare they do....as GPs and consultants say they dont have time but i know its difficult when the form asks you to list GPs and contact and give consent for contact...yet they dont. Tkae as much with you as possible and ensure its covered.

Ps wish you good luck :)

What the DWP do is pay lip service to what they should do and ignore their own instructions. PIP unlike DLA sets down what the DWP and their agents are required to obtain evidence simply because in doing so it would make PIP a much fairer system. Previously under DLA those that had the money, where they had a good supporting GP and consultant (to window dress their claim )had a much higher chance of gaining an award over those on limited income and had little contact with the medical professionals. Much like having a privately paid for solicitor/barrister versus one paid for by legal aid.

It is a fact that PIP was to be made different than DLA. One of those differences is that it was enacted that the DWP would collect evidence either themselves or their agent instead of putting the onus on the claimant as it was under DLA. I would suggest you read Hansard in detail before suggesting that my comments are rubbish.

Yes I know that the DWP are trying their best to push that responsibility back onto the claimant. But for the time being all they can say to a claimant is to ask that they send in what they have.

The DWP know full well what they are supposed to do, but as typical, they choose to ignore it and 'force' the claimant to run round paying for it. The DWP simply refuse to make an award putting the onus on the claimant that they are wrong.

Had assessment today. It was for me the worst thing because I had to be open and say what I was dealing with. Since being aware of what I have I have muddled through with things not wanting to discuss my disability or show my vulnerability. It was one lady and she typed down my answers but how I feel when I came out was not relief but, totally drained and sick.
