Honda Jazz gear box failure

My Honda is making a noise and when I took it to the garage they said the gear box was going. Now, my car is old and frankly its not worth repairing. I am trying to save up for a new car but have no idea how long this one will last. Can anyone tell me whether the car will suddenly fail one day or simply get noisier and noisier ( which it is doing already) At the moment it makes a noise in 1st,2nd and 3rd gear but not fourth. The longer I can continue to drive it the more I can put down as a deposit. It is however rather unnerving and I dont want to be stranded somewhere. The garage said it was difficult to tell , it could last six months or even a year, although I swear it is getting worse! I dont do high mileage, just local driving but do live in the countryside so am somewhat isolated if I do break down. I belong to the RAC of course.

Frankly it almost certainly is worth repairing, it will be far cheaper than buying another car.
Ring round a few garages and get some quotes.0 -
I'm afraid this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" type questions. Honda are a notoriously reliable brand but every manufacturer has their issues and without knowing the maintenance history of your car nobody is going to be able to answer your question.
If I was in your shoes and there's no other known faults with the car I'd be ringing round the breakers yards looking for a replacement gearbox. But only you will know if even that's an economical repair.
Best of luck! You can have results or excuses, but not both.Challenge - be 14 Stone BY XMAS!

There's a thread by someone who's recently had their gearbox replaced after driving with it getting progressively noisier. They're pleased with the results.
If the car is otherwise ok and you can get a reasonable quote for the work then consider the repair.
Edit to add: and switch from RAC to Autoaid and you'll save the cost of the repair over 2 or 3 yearsGive a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day.
But give a man a fishing rod, and he'll sell it and buy alcohol.0 -
Has the gearbox oil been changed? I am not aware of the service requirements on the Hondas but a lot of gearboxes are supposedly "sealed for life" - strangely enough as they get older they can benefit massively from a fluid change.
If its not been done it should be a cheap job that might make a difference.0 -
source a exchange box , failing that keep driving it however avoid motorways last thing you want to do is it let go at 70 MPH0

Here's a gearbox for 2002-2008 Jazz with 45k miles on it for £150 and they offer a fitting service, probably not much more than £2-300.

If the rest of the car is fine, might be worth a punt.0 -

Instead I traded it in, being honest with the dealer. He didn't really mind, as he was sending it to auction.0 -
Having heard about Jazz gearbox problems, I got the oil in mine changed at 50,000 miles and it's fine at 60,000 miles plus. I wonder whether occasionally a bit of dirt or swarf gets trapped in there during assembly.0

Just a further note re oil changes: the Jazz manual says for manual transmissions it's every 8 years or 75000 miles..... hence my choice of 11 years and 50,000 miles, I suppose.0
