Imagine a hospital corridor, above the false ceiling it's crammed with all the plumbing, electrical, medical gases pipework, huge bundles of network cables, airtubes and so on.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • £300 sounds like a lot, but I guess the problem is they have a captive audience as this sort of thing really is best done when the house is being built! However, for comparison I paid £385 5 years ago for network cabling to 7 rooms in my new build, terminating in the cupboard where I planned to site the router plus an additional £50 to get a phone point installed in the same cupboard.

Personally I would probably pay up for it to be installed, as I've found the cabling invaluable over the last few years. It's probably my favourite extra (after the kitchen upgrades!). However, I would caution you to think carefully about where you have it installed, and if anything get more points than you think you would need rather than skimping on it.

Places I have worked we always separate the power at data cables. Sameand similar services are bundled together, we often use metal trunking were possible, but granted thing do go through the same hole, but do not travel together over distances.

For two data points very expensive. Could spec armoured cable to get somewhere near vfm.
Agree dual cable all rooms. It's a bit like plugs there are never enough of them
  • It's expensive given they have the walls all open so the job is a simple, and quick job. It's a definite "upsale", that's for sure. It will be a bigger job if you subsequently decide you want it, and messy too. As with anything it might be negotiable but don't bank on it.

thanks everyone - they have you over a barrel don't they!! Meeting is on Sunday, so I will see what they offer - but as a minimum I want it in main bedroom, lounge, office & kitchen.

  • £300 is expensive for two points, barter them down, its not much work for them if its at the right stage of the build so I'd imagine they'd come down a fair bit in price.

WiFi is great, but a pain in the !!!! and limiting! Do it properly, get it cabled in! You wont regret it in the future when streaming a 4k Movie to your TV
