New house build - CAT6 cables

Hi,

We are having a new house built by a national builder.

They can install CAT6 network cables as part of this build.

I have Sky Q and a Mac, so am just wandering whether it is worth spending £300 for 2 data points or save the money and use wireless or an wifi extender?

Any thoughts?

Thanks Mark

  • Define the two data points ? One near the the phone socket and one say upstairs if that's the case it's seems expensive , but I would want a cat6 socket in each room (perhaps not in the bogs) If it is a new build then they can run it from a point near the router to the loft (say) and and then from there to each room and then sell you a 8/16 port switch in the loft. The possibilities are endless really. IMHO if you can cable beforehand then you are almost future proof

Oh of I forgot to mention the cost of the sockets in each room , oops

I'd agree, £300 sounds expensive for a new build if you're only getting 2 "data points". I'd be wanting a cat6 socket throughout for that cost.

Yes £300 does seem expensive ... but then that is the issue with buying a new build - the extras are expensive!

Description says: broadband ready, hard-wired data connection to selected rooms of your home (using cat6 cabling).

Just trying to work out whether it is worth it ...

    Thanks Mark

I've installed my own cat 6.
You want at least one cable from each room to a central hub.
Personally I'd put in a second cable through the trunking too, there are so many things that you can run over cat 6 cable, CCTV, even HDMI (that might need three cables) etc. You cant get Cat6 adapters for almost anything.

One thought, make sure they know how to install cat 6 including no sharp bends, and know not to run the cable in the same condute, or alongside in parallel as the other electrical wires
  • One thing to remember when making you decision is that we read a lot of posts from people asking about wifi extenders, better routers etc because they have problems with the wifi signal in their home. No-one ever asks about improving the throughput over proper ethernet cable, it simply works.

yes, but do a cost/benefit analysis first ;)

However it'll work OK if they do.

    Agree.
I worked for 11 years building hospitals and universities and I dread to think how they would manage to get all the cables along corridors and up/down service ducts if they had to be separated.:)

Indeed. I did an installation last year above a false ceiling where there were cable trays hung from the first floor above and the data and power cables were separated but where they went through the steel beams they ended up going through the same hole as one large lump of cables making the whole thing pointless.

In an ideal world you'd keep them separate but it isn't the end of the world if you don't.
