    You can't realistically do anything forever! Windows 7 gets security updates for another two years, so there's no need to panic just yet.
    my sons 9 year old hp laptop is running nicely on win10

    I have a couple of machines of a similar age. One is running quite nicely on Windows 7. The only reason to move to Windows 10 would be to experience the ugly bloated user-interface and enforced updates. (In other words, if you don't like having choices and want Microsoft to do what it thinks is best for you.)

    The other machines run Arch Linux, which performs far better than any Windows OS.
