Win 10 Creators Update

Options
Update 1709............
Emachines E525 laptop fairly old.
First time this massive update knocked the sound from my laptop.
Got it back by doing a restore.
Second time it knocked out the wifi from the laptop.
Got it back by doing a restore.
The flaming update has again downloaded & knocked out the sound again.
Got it back by doing a restore.
After spending many hours & Dr Google I have come to the conclusion that my poor old laptop just cannot cope with this update.
I have now set up Metered Connection to stop this download taking place.
I presume that NO downloads will take place now ??
Or is there a way of selecting which downloads I want ??
TIA

  • The problem is twofold, firstly if you stop updates you are more vulnerable to malware and viruses. Secondly, old hardware isn’t necessarily compatible with Windows 10.

You might have to settle for Windows 7, or 8, or whatever the old machine came with.

I don’t think there are inherent issues with the Creators Edition, we have it running happily on an Acer laptop and an Asus one too. It also runs fine on an Asus motherboard in a desktop PC.

Rather than doing a system restore to undo the changes, I'd try to run the update and then fix the problems it causes.

If you go into the device manager and try reinstalling the wifi/audio driver when the problem occurs, that might fix the problem.

Also, are you running the latest BIOS? Version 3.10 released 15/11/2010 appears to be the most recent version.

  • I have tried deleting & re installing all the updated drivers but that had no effect.
Have just updated the BIOS so will see if that works.

An update in case it might help somebody somewhere.
Update the BIOS & the Creator update no longer garbles my laptop.

Word of warning of course, will the manufacture keep updating the older BIOS, in the not too distant future Microsoft will probably stop updates to older Intel/AMD cpus. I believe that already if you the web stories there are lists of CPUs/Systems which will never get beyond 2017/10 , smacks of Apple rationale to me, but realistically no-one can support everything forever. Good luck for the future;)

If you are having problems with Win 10 I would recommenced you to install win 8 or pro.

Really? Why wouldn't you sort out the problem?
Installing an old OS is a bit pointless IMO.

Well the "problem" is essentially unsolvable with Win10.
Win 10 being a service is being constantly upgraded with new 'features' so older computer of all types will get to the stage when they will not run it correctly.

Furthermore you cannot with win 10 simply not update on a permanent basis though you may be able to temporarily do so for a short time on some editions.

Worse still unlike you going out and buying a new windows edition you may find that your computer gets upgraded automatically overnight to win10..edition 171216 and suddenly the next morning no longer works.

So the problem is obviously solveable by installing an OS which
    a) runs on it correctly
    b) does not get updated other than to receive security updates.

and that is why the proposal is to think about installing Win 8.1 instead.
Mind you those of us who foresaw the issues and potential problems when the concept of how Win10 as a service was going to work was released ensured we stayed on Win 7.

As an example of a piece of software which ran perfectly on earlier win10 ed's but suddenly with an update no longer worked look at Karen's replicator - a file backup program.

As the good author of the program is deceased and the source code never released all those running it who found one day overnight it no longer worked were in a mess.
I'm sure most of them had better things to do than scramble around urgently to find a new file replication/backup program which suited their usage.

This is the sort of thing that drives people apoplectic with rage at Microsoft.

My, you do seem to be angered easily.;)
I guess we are at polar ends of the discussion. I do not see any point in hanging on to old outdated programs, especially ones that are not being developed any longer.
I have a 10 year old laptop saved from being binned by running W10 without any problems and I've installed it on many others for people who have had no problems, whatsoever. Old laptops, new programs, I think I'm safe in saying that all those who have moved up to W10 haven't found anything they can't do that they did do.
I am of course referring to home users and while I appreciate that there may be some people that use obscure programs they've used for years and can't/won't change, I wouldn't want to see MS stand still because of that.
