Is the compensation adequate?

Complex case so other threads not comparable but wondering if Air France have made a reasonable offer. Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Booked business class seats from Manchester to Montevideo (long haul). All flights were booked direct with Air France and did not state any change of airline.
Manchester - Paris was flybe (only found out when I'd been to air france desk!) so no business class. Flight was delayed due to fog plus two failed attempts at landing :(.
Paris - San Paulo was Air France but missed connecting flight due to previous delay. 12 hour wait in Paris. Offered use of lounge and offered hotel but accepted the former. Knew I would miss the connecting flight in San Paulo so Air France in Paris reissued ticket for the next connecting flight..
Paris - SP flight was good and class I booked.
Arrived in San Paulo only to find that the flight ticket which was reissued was for the same flight I had missed. Another 12 hour wait. Baggage also gone missing. Told bags would be sent direct to hotel when they located them. In the mean time took up the offer of hotel in San Paulo.
Connecting flight from San Paulo to Montevideo was a local carrier - no business class.
Arrived at my destination 24 hours late.

Also paid for business class priority boarding but none available in Manchester with Flybe nor in San Paulo with the airline I was rescheduled for.

Bag arrived with me in Montevideo 4 days late - to make matters worse they wouldn't deliver to hotel. I had to travel to the airport to collect and pay the £80 taxi fare.

Fortunately no delays on the return leg but no business class on same routes!

Air France have offered to pay all the expenses incurred for food, clothes, taxi's etc as I've provided receipts. Compensation offered is 10,000 air miles.

Would I be right in thinking it should be 75% of the cost of each flight which didn't have business class plus 600 euros for the delay?

Many thanks in advance :)

  • Not sure how I would calculate the cost of the flights which didn't have the class I booked though!

You are probably not due any compensation under the regulation as your first flight which caused the delay, was affected directly by the foggy weather. This is, in most cases, classed as an EC.
Another life lesson today - always carefully check your booking when booking several legs. Somewhere it will state which airline is flying the different legs.. It involves additional homework for you but airlines won't always voluntarily give you all the information.
Did you actually pay business class for the 2 legs that din't have it?

No. You weren't downgraded, it's just that not all flights on your itinerary have a separate business class cabin. If your delay was due to fog you won't be entitled to compensation either.

If you booked on the AF website it shows the details of the airline that operate each leg (if you click on the fare it shows the details)
eg sample for the route AF5013 - operated by Flybe, AF454 operated by Air France, AF6332 operated by GOL..codeshares can be complex
If you click on the flight details it shows what benefits are valid and which are not
The Air France flight you are booking will be provided through our partnership with Flybe. To better prepare for your trip, we advise you to read the information below. ....

It does not change things regarding compensation but it is a useful lesson on understanding codeshares...especially if there was a delay on the return flight, knowing whether the operating airline was an EU airline or not
  • Yes, booked business all the way. I did get business class back from Paris on return leg as it was Air France - error in opening post - just not Montevideo to SP.

I thought I would be entitled to something as the reissue of the ticket in Paris was incorrect resulting in a further 12 hour delay. By the time they had sorted it out I'd missed the intended flight (I got as far as security so had to be escorted back to the main terminal).

Will have to look through the original booking to see what the details were for each leg

Thanks for all the responses :)
