Doesn't affect me. My phone hasn't got NFC
  • I use Android Pay the whole time – almost to the complete exclusion of cash in my life. It has the considerable merit of simplicity. The new app looks as if it could be more complicated and will provide more information. No bad idea in itself but I hope there are not too many integration issues as I find it very useful.
  • I suppose crusty old Barclays still won't support it.

    Wow karld316 - a puerile anti-Barclays post. That's unusual for you!

    Probably not for a while.

Apple was very protective of the NFC chip inside its phones and didn't allow third party apps to use it.

    https://9to5mac.com/2017/06/07/apple-opening-up-some-access-to-the-iphones-nfc-chip-in-ios-11/:
Apple has strongly resisted giving NFC to bank apps on security grounds. The company argues that Apple Pay represents the gold standard for payment security, and doesn’t want banks to be able to offer less secure solutions.

Third party apps can use the NFC chip in Android phones, which allowed Barclays to develop its own contactless service for Android devices.

Barclays view: why share revenue from contactless payments when you can keep it all for yourself?

I suspect there will come a time when Barclays joins the [STRIKE]Android[/STRIKE] Google Pay party.

No idea when that will be. They've soldiered on with Pingit for longer than I thought they would.

Their "cunning plan" didn't work in our case. We've switched to other cards that do work with Google pay (and Samsung pay for that matter).
Tesco seem to be trying the Barclays plan, too, though oddly they work on Apple....

So you can make payments without having to have a card with you.

I keep the cards i regularly use in my wallet and i don't take my wallet to work as i don't need it. But sometimes i buy things during the working day or travelling to and from work and i use my phone to pay.

Just like when people use to think they might need to take pictures of something they took a camera with them. Now that mobile phones have decent enough cameras for the majority of pictures people very rarely use a camera.
