Before you book the flights, check that there is somewhere to stay, places do get very busy.

I really think Ljubljana's one of the nicest places to 'experience' Christmas (and markets) - a fairytale city. I've found this blog which sums it up very well.

  • Going to Berlin next weekend - got a very cheap hotel last minute and the flights were a steal. Looked at the dates and they seemed to be from the end of November. Booked the flights....checked another website and it doesn't start till December. Ooops.

Last year we went to the market in Hamburg. Totally excellent, and all the food was amazing. Gluwein was lovely but the best stuff was the eirpunch (sp?) - egg nog with a kick!

So, erm, yeah - my reccommendations. Oh yeah - Salzburg. Brilliant.
  • Birmingham one is nice, and there is an outdoor ice rink and carosel (sp?) as well.

I think I'm going to Bath for the day, that's supposed to be good.

You don't need a dictionary for Germany, I would say just about everyone will understand you. The German market in Birmingham is really nice and authentic, they come from Frankfurt, we go every year, as I am German myself and cannot live without a German christmas market!

This year we will be checking out the Winder Wonderland in Hyde Park as well, it is said to have a German Christmas market as well.

I agree with Salzburgh though, it is such a lovely city, and really easy to reach by Ryanair.

There is a huge Christmas market at Auchan in Germany that is great and you can combine it with the markets in the caves in Valkenburg, Holland as they are not far apart.

If you want to avoid eating horsemeat- at least know the word for it..
  • Very much doubt if there is a large Christmas Market in Auchan, Germany. Aachen is the place in Germany, Auchan is a French Hypermarket.

    Apologies to original poster.
