Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance. How can I check the data on my credit reference files is correct?

The free versions to check your credit files are below:
    Experian: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditclub
    Equifax: https://www.clearscore.com
    Call Credit: https://www.noddle.co.uk

Check that you are on the electoral roll.

Are your bank accounts / credit cards / mobile phone / loans / car finance etc all showing?

Check that you aren't financially associated with someone incorrectly.

Check that there are no late payments, defaults or CCJs.

  • Thanks for the links :)
  • I've tried to sign up the credit club but my details can't be verified. I have an account with clear score though, is it worth making accounts for all of them or is just one of them needed?
  • All of them, as different lenders report to different CRAs, and mistakes can be made on one but not the others.
  • Okay thanks. I noticed that my electoral roll address is wrong on one of them, do I need to contact the credit agency about this or the council? I did get a letter through to say I had been transferred onto the local electoral roll. I transferred over in December as I moved house then.

You need accounts with all 3 as each agency can hold vastly different info from another and you need to make sure that your info appears correct across all 3 because you won't know which agency a bank or any lender is going to use when they credit search you.

There was one thread on here recently where the person had only checked 1 of their files and applied for a mortgage, only to find that they were declined due to a CCJ that was applied on their file with one of the other agencies.
