Surely they can only deduct enough to reduce wage to statutory minimum wage, so a cashier already on minimum wage could not have the deduction even if contractual as statute always overrides contract

I don't think that's the case but even if it was it could be paid back in stages to avoid that

Of course it will, there will be a camera at the cash register, it very well may record sound too. Think about any forecourt you've ever been on, when you're asked what pump you'll usually notion towards the forecourt in some way or another.

As I stated, I'm not saying he shouldn't pay. Just that he shouldn't be the one to do the legwork. People don't deliberately steal £15 worth of fuel then go into the shop and buy a sandwich. £50 wouldn't have gone through on contactless anyway so your hypothetical situation is irrelevant.

It’s unlikely to have sound and as for you point about people stealing fuel and buying something in the shop, yes it does happen.

I would contact them and pay for fuel.

I had an embarrassing experience where, I thought I had paid at the pump, but unknown to me and I still don't understand how, my card was not charged.

I got a visit from the police :-(

Modern systems record sound, but we're only guessing here about the cctv and its recording abilities, so let's just stick to what we know. The OP didn't deliberately steal fuel. He didn't go in and buy a sandwich as a distraction technique.

We're all entitled to our own opinion about what he should do, nobody is disputing the fact that he is liable for the cost of the fuel, only whether or not he should phone up and pay it or wait to see if he gets a knock at the door/invoice through the post. As far as I'd be concerned it's their mistake so I'd wait and see what happened.

What if the garage is unable to do customer not present transactions? Since the dawn of chip and pin, it's not often possible to manually input the card details.

The important thing with BACS is to always make sure you get the details in writing NOT just verbally! I would ask them to send a letter on company headed paper showing the company bank account details

You're right. Unless they've justified it as a measure to protect their assets and staff, in an environment where they're at risk. Of say, robbery? Perhaps in a bank or, dare I say, filling station? Anyway, it's irrelevant.

The OP isn't going to face any repercussions.

[B[The OP isn't going to face any repercussions.[/B]

That depends on a number of factors.
