Externally Beaded Windows?

  • FWIW, in Jan 2000 the burglars climbed onto the flat roof below our bedroom window (at night while we were away), removed the external glazing beads and galss panel from one window to get access to the room and the house, then spent hours ransacking the house and carting the goods away. Our windows had been fitted in about 1992 by a well known and reputable company and we were told they were very secure - but there was no locking system or sticky tape used.

  • t my place of work someone locked the keys in the office and then went on leave with their set so i popped the external beads and was in the office in no time
  • What? So someone said he can get into internally beaded windows quicker than externally beaded windows? Who is he? David Blaine? Dynamo? Simples... The external beading can easilly be removed by good (if that word can be attributed to such scum) burglars using nothing other than a screwdriver and a glass sucker. Internal beadings are inside your property. What does he do, put his hand through the glass and remove them from inside? Or does he break open the sash, lean in, take out the top internal bead then somehow grow giant arms to lean down and remove both side beads and bottom beads?

Whilst I think everyone would agree that internal beading is preferable, no-one should be fooled into thinking it’s burglar proof. My old neighbours house was broken into by burglars smashing the panel near the handle and opening the window. This is a lot quicker than taking out the panel.
  • As mpet just pointed out Scummy professional burglars will choose the easiest method of entry. We regularly deal with instances where the slime ball literally throws a paving slab through a huge window or French door. It is a bit of a game. The harder we make it for the thieves they just change their methods.
  • BTW... I'd be absolutely amazed if any company was still supplying externally beaded UPVC frames. However, I could be wrong and I'll hold my hand up if so...While it is not mandatory they would not adhere to certain 'standards' such as secured by design and I'm of the opinion that they would not meet the window energy ratings (U Values with external beadings etc). Could be wrong though??

Not on a timber window if security glazing tape is used.. Tape applied to the back of the rebate, then the units is set on plastci packers and pushed against the tape. Then silicone around the perimeter of the sealed unit and then apply tape to the external bead and then pin in place with 18g stainless pins..

Using a hammer to pull off the beads won't work and any burglar will break the beads but the units won't cone out because they are stuck to the tape in the rebate... Upvc may well be as you say but not timber windows externally beaded on security glazing tape.
  • I never mentioned or meant Timber windows. I explicitly meant PVC windows. If you look at my following post you can see I even mention that I’d be amazed if externally Glazed UPVC windows were still available.

Yes, hardwood windows, security tape, glazing silicone with external beading is good. Again, as I alluded to... burglars probably wouldn’t go to the trouble of messing about De Glazing IGU’s.

As strange as this seems the company offering the externally beaded windows also offer to replace any window broken into, this is the exact quote from their website: "SECURITY GUARANTEE

We are so confident in the quality of our products and the experience of our fitting teams that we offer a guarantee that should your home be broken into through one of our windows or doors then we will replace that product free of charge.*

    * This guarantee covers the products where access has been gained and not products damaged during an attempted break in." Notice however, no offer to replace stolen goods.
