Barclaycard PPI

Hi All

After years of assuming I had never had PPI before I decided to contact Barclaycard speculatively to see if I had ever had PPI on my Barclaycard which I have held since Feb 97.

A few weeks later I received a letter stating I had in fact had a PPI policy on a previous Barclaycard and that although 'the policy was taken out a long time ago'...'This will still be enough information for us to fully investigate'.

Subsequently I completed a complaint form using the Resolver tool. Further to this I was contacted by Barclaycard to confirm my employment status when I took out the card.

However I have now received a letter showing that they have investigated and are now unable to find any evidence of a PPI policy or premium that I have paid and that the complaint will be closed.

Based on the two pieces of conflicting information they have provided I would like to pursue further, can anyone advise on what next steps I should take?

    This is not conflicting.

Many credit cards have PPI on them but have never paid a penny. If you pay the bill in full each month within the interest free period, you are not charged PPI. So, you can have PPI on the account but never pay a penny as you never trigger the payment.

If you paid any PPI, it would have been itemised on a separate line on the monthly statement(s).
If you still have the card that'd be ~240 statements?
  • Unfortunately I don’t have any statements going back that far, thanks

Unfortunately that leaves you in a very weak position because you cannot contest the bank's assertion that you never paid any PPI (even though you had a policy).

Without evidence to the contrary, it's difficult to see where you might go with this..
  • Thanks for the response. I had a balance on this card for a number of years upon receiving the card. Under what other circumstances would I have a policy but not paid PPI on the card?

The point is that, without any documentary proof of this, how can you contest the Bank's assertion that you didn't pay any PPI?
  • Thanks again, I have completed a Subject Access Request which hopefully confirms whether or not I had PPI on the original application. But yes agree otherwise it will be difficult to prove.

That is not in question, though.

. The sticking point is whether you actually paid any PPI.

You should probably adjust your SAR accordingly or it will be £10 wasted.

Barclays can probably see on their pre-qual systems that a PPI policy existed and the date it was taken out, so hopefully a SAR will produce details of your transactions and balances going back to 2001.

This should provide sufficient evidence for them to calculate an offer from the opening of the account based on the average balance.
