Amex collects DD within 14 days vs others 25 days?

I have a BA Amex which produces a statement with a due date that is 25 days from the statement date, but if you set up a Direct Debit for auto-payment (as many people do), then the DD payment gets collected 14 days from the statement date, i.e. a whole 11 days before the due date.

I also have an MBNA (Miles & More) Amex which has no issues taking the DD payment on or around the due date and therefore the full ~25 days from the statement date. The same goes for all other Visa and Mastercard credit cards I have ever had.

Whilst many of us like the ability to earn BA Avios without travelling, I'm not sure how people feel about this "shortened" interest free period with BA Amex if one chooses to pay by DD.

Maybe we need to start a campaign to demand some parity with other providers (or do people think we would be shooting ourselves in the foot by bringing about a reduction in the Avios perks)?

I just make a manual payment to get the maximum period, I don't like that I need to do it that way and opening myself up to the risk of not making the payment on time, but paying Amex (not just the BA one) early grinds my gears.

Oh please. You are perfectly free to either not use an Amex, or to not use the DD if you don't want to. They are under no obligation to offer anything just because other providers do. (and BTW way all "non Amex issued Amex" cards are disappearing very soon)

But consider the case of DD failure. With Amex, you have 11 days to sort that. With others, they slap you with a missed payment charge.
  • Both my Tesco credit cards have a payment date about 14 days after the statement is produced.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Lots of defence for good ol' Amex :-)

I take back the quest for a "campaign", and accept to live with it until another time!

Are they forcing you to pay by Direct Debit?

  • Personally I really like this. It means if anything goes wrong you have time to fix it.

I have simply pointed out other providers being able to handle DD payments about 11 days later than Amex do and without any issues, that is a fact so if the truth hurts then tough!
  • My MBNA is 14 days after statement date, its most likely a set date that banks use to maximise there cashflow at a certain time for reporting.
  • Just keep telling yourself that Amex offers a superior level of service and they are not like other cards.
