Amex certainly do things differently, but I'm not complaining.

I got £57.50 cashback on my BA Amex last year, on top of Avios which I value at 0.8% of spending.

And it wasn't even my main card last year!

Of course, there are good things too. If you ever move, Amex will open a new account wherever you move to very easily. No credit history needed. Try that (except with the highest tiers of HSBC) with any other bank...

I think they will do that sometimes. A friend of mine move to the US to take a highly paid job. He'd had an Amex card for several years in the UK with no issues. They said it was a "service" they offered to provide him with a card in the US. But they also said he couldn't "enrol" (they love that word) until he'd been resident there for 6 months.

Another friend lived in Taiwan. Very wealthy chap. He moved to the UK to run a branch office of a Taiwanese company. They wouldn't open an account in the UK for him, despite his having an Amex Platinum in Taiwan (at the time, the top tier).
