I think this is a sensible approach and the one I would take. I also suspect that a main/franchise dealership will be more flexible on negotiating discounts. So you see the cars at Cargiant to get a feel of what you are after and then look around for a better deal (if there is one elsewhere for your desired car/spec etc)
