In a hotel with hundreds of rooms and hundreds of guests, how would they even know?
Different story if meals and drinks are included in your room price and he's claiming those, or if he's using the hotel gym when he's not actually a paying guest, but if he's only sleeping over for a night after you've been out on the town or whatever then I can't see it being an issue.

We have done it dozens of times. But only in the USA where we used to get 2 double beds in the room, except the one time when asked for and got a rollaway bed. Can’t remember if they charged us for that or not ( we asked housekeeping rather than the front desk)0

I think it's worth asking for a roll away bed first then take it from there. Might have to pay if that fails.0
