Lidl Mattress returns!

:mad:I bought a memory foam mattress from Lidl. It came vacuum wrapped rolled up in a plastic bag. I opened it and discovered the quality was very poor and not suitable for my bed. I gave it a few days to expand further then contacted Lidl to request advice on how to return it as it no longer fitted the packaging. I received no response so rang customer services and was told to send a copy of my receipt which I did. After 2 further 'sympathetic' telephone conversations, I am now being told I cannot return it as it is no longer in the original packaging. I am being told to send them a photo of the poor quality and they will determine if I can have my money back. What are my rights?? I had to open it to determine if it was good enough! Other than a bit of loose stitching, how do I photograph a poor quality mattress?

  • In mattresses quality is very much linked to price. If it was one of those £75 jobs it was never going to be suitable for much more than use on a guest bed.

I would concentrate on the loose stitching and return it as faulty. Mattresses and bedding are generally excluded from change of mind returns for hygiene reasons.
  • Come on what exactly did you expect from Lidl? I agree focus on the poor stitching that's your best bet I reckon!

What did you expect for that price? You get what you pay for.

    Poor quality is not faulty.

    How much did you pay?

I'm guessing it wasn't very expensive, hence not great quality. You really do get what you pay for with a mattress.

If, however you paid £200+ then you would have more of an argument.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

It might not have been a lot of money to some folk but it was a lot of money to me!

It's not about whether it's a lot of money to you, it's about how little money it is for a mattress. You cannot expect a £75 mattress to be particularly good, it really is the absolute rock bottom end of a budget mattress so would be expected to be the absolute rock bottom lowest quality mattress you can buy.

Top of the range mattresses sell for a couple of thousand pounds, mid range/average ones sell for several hundred pounds, bottom range mattresses sell for around £100-£150, the one you bought was even cheaper so is expected to be of lower quality.
  • To be honest, I bought it with the thought of "it's cheap so don't expect too much". Sure enough, I soon found it wasn't firm enough to span the lats of my bed. Therefore I wish to return it as not being of sufficient quality for me to use it as a mattress on my bed. Lidl say no problem returning it, but it has to be back in its original packaging - which is something I physically can't do due to the vacuum sealed element.
The poor quality stitching doesn't detract from the usability but it is indicative of the poor quality (as well as the price!!).
  • Sounds like the mat my son's university provided in his accommodation. Seemed to think it was a mattress.

Is the mattress as described? It sounds like it's the wrong size for your bed, but that's not a quality issue, it's an erroneous purchase.
