Ahh, I have it installed for Sky Go so have never had that. I don't think it's been "updated" for a long while now and without bothering to check I think MS have stated it won't be (to be fully dropped in 202? something). Strange that MS want you to install it.0 -
KB2952664 has been "decaffeinated" by Microsoft:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2952664/compatibility-update-for-keeping-windows-up-to-date-in-windows-7
EXCERPT:
" This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. The diagnostics evaluate the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem, and help Microsoft to ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows. There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update. "
I have installed it on my desktop and OH's laptop, no problem. The Boldened section means that this KB cannot install anything other than Windows 7 and Server 2008 components. Nothing at all to worry about.
I usually do read the words behind the update before allowing it to install but on this occasion, as I "knew" it was the old attempt to install W10 by the back door, I didn't go investigating, just clicked HIDE.
Maybe I (and MS) need to take a lesson from this.0 -

It's not related to GWX (Get Windows 10) functionality. It's a telemetry update.
MS are probably using the data they collect about users to ensure that any major hurdles preventing them upgrading to Win10 are resolved. But the hotfix itself won't install Win10 "by the back door".
If you are willing participating in the Customer Experience Improvement Program, then you should install this hotfix. If you dislike the idea of telemetry, do not install it or any of the other CEIP updates.0 -
Nothing in that link suggests that this update had GWX functionality that has been "stripped" or "decaffeinated" as you suggest.
Do you have another source you're not telling us about?
What part of " There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update. " did you not read and/or understand?
I'm done with this one now. Deepseated antipathy to Windows 10 has convinced those who do not bother to read through the link I gave, that it is all the work of the devil.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

There are no dead rabbits contained in the update either, so... I suppose you think that Microsoft have re-released the patch with all the dead rabbits removed...?
Come on -- stop pretending you can't understand a basic English sentence.0 -

What has that got to do with anything?! How does the popularity of Windows 10 convince you to ignore Microsoft's official documentation?!
READ THE LINK... The one YOU gave.0 -
i thought everyone was given a free upgrade from 7 to 10? my sons 9 year old hp pavillion is running nicely on win10"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

It sounds like the OP is using Windows 7.0 -

You know the old saying - if it is free then YOU are the product.
I'm still on win 7 for my main PC's and laptops which are used for work and running voluntary organisations as well general personal use.
I do have an inherited win10 PC from a deceased relative which I can experiment with and the whole thing really is a pile of sh*t.
Programs which work on one update mysteriously do not when it gets updated.
In fact it is almost a bad a Linux in some respects for updates breaking things.
I can see where MS are going long term - a total subscription model within everything fully uptodate on a daily basis of updates with the user compulsorily using the latest version of whatever program all fully paid for.
Almost back to the days of central mega mainframe computers controlling the software, login credentials etc and dumb local terminals using it.
I suppose from the standard home user point of view not using specialist programs Win10 probably works OK - mind you that sort of person has probably abandoned PC's for Apple/android tablets instead.0 -

a lot of free software out there but afaik win10 is not free anymore."The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
