technology has moved on. i binned my blu-ray player at least 5 years ago. people stream movie these days. don't waste money on a new dvd player.

Most modern tv's support viewing media from a USB memory stick.
You could try copying the files from a DVD on to a stick if you have one (bigger than 4GB) and see if it works.0 -

If it's only got SCART and no HDMI then it must be really old stock. I've not seen a non-HDMI (new) device for years.
