If I buy items on ebay, I only pay via paypal. I did inadvertently win one item with the buyer later saying cash on collection only, even though payment by paypal was listed in the payment section.

Ebay said he could do this. I wasn't prepared to pay cash so we both withdrew from the auction.

Rightly or wrongly, I feel there is more protection if I pay by paypal.

Protection for the buyer, zero for the seller on collection items.

As per the sticky thread I mentioned earlier the buyer always has the right to use PayPal, except for items in the motor categories, despite what seller says.

  • Unfortunately, Ebay advised otherwise. Its not a big deal, we just both backed out of the auction but I was a bit surprised at Ebay's attitude as I thought a seller had to accept paypal, and there was no mention of cash only in the listing. Still, such is life. No great loss. I was probably lucky to be able to back out of the auction.

Assuming this was not a motor vehicle then whoever told you the seller could refuse under ebay rules was wrong. This really is all covered in the sticky thread.

What probably happened is that the seller decided to refuse it and ebay knew that a seller couldn't be forced to accept paypal, after all they can't actually march round there and grab the goods for you. So you either had to accept that seller would not sell to you and walk away, or decline any cancellation and leave poor feedback. There was no way that you could enforce ebay rules to use paypal if seller stood firm. Sellers always have the right to refuse to sell, it can end badly for a seller which is why collection items are not ideal now on ebay.

I recently sold a piano on ebay, cash on collection. (No £50 notes - just in case!) They wanted to pay by PayPal but I didn't want them to. They did come to collect, paid cash and all was well. Some people are honest and some people think ebay is a good way to scam others. It's a gamble!
