meat and potato pie. Okay, so the filling is more or less the same as a stew/casserole, but the pastry makes all the difference!

You will need to cook it for a long time just to get it tender, plus it will have to be cooked in stock or gravy to keep it moist. So really it's going to have to be some sort of stew or casserole. Unless you mince it first of course?

    I've just made this:

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1859/muffintopped-winter-beef-stew

which was yummy (it's for dinner but I've made it already and had a taste; I find these things are usually better at least a few hours after or the day after cooking).

Or what about a beef curry? Still ok for stewing steak but a bit different from casserole/stew? Or even make some kind of spicy beef stew like concoction and serve over cous cous for a change?

Or maybe you could make a chilli and just cook it with plenty more sauce than usual for a long time until it reduces down?

Thanks all - bourguignon was my first thought but haven't made it before - one to consider :) We're not really pie people (I'm not keen on pastry and always watching my diet even though pregnant) so probably not this time, but thanks.

A curry is always a winner with OH, so might have to do that though that winter stew looks mighty tasty! I should be able to do curry in the SC shouldn't I? Not tried it before! :o

Thanks for all your replies :)

I love chilli make with stewing steak rather than mince - done in the slowcooker or hob for a good few hours - lots of cumin, chilli, allspice, garlic and red or black beans, add peppers half an hour form the end

Never thought of making chilli with anything but mince but that's always a good one in our house too :)

It's laaaavly with big chunks of meat and some bread (garlic if poss) to mop the juices up with! We're not big mince fans here!

Instead of full on pastry you could use some filo sheets.
