Well, the whole point of two step verificiation is to prevent people from accessing your account with just one factor, such as the password.

Google has guidance on what to do if you lose your phone after you turned 2 step verification on.

I have got those now and saved them where I can get at them just in case.

Ah, theres the difference then, I dont have 2FA on my google account.

By the way, still works for me even when using a VPN.

I suppose your problem makes sense with 2FA enabled.
I didn't have 2 stage set up, so it may just come back to not having the app. If nothing else, I wanted to point out it may not be as simple as people expect if the worst does happen.

Have you tried it on a device not 'trusted' with your account?

If you use another android phone, as suggested, you can add your account to that phone, making it a trusted device(assuming this can be done), but this would not be the case if you were out and about and the only other phone available was an Apple one for example.
If you lose your phone, you don't want to have to wait til you get home to find, lock or erase your phone.

Yes, it works perfectly on my trusted home laptop when I had the app installed, just don't know if it was because I didn't have the app, or because it was an untrusted device, or because it was an untrusted device using mobile broadband on an IP address I'd never used before.

I knew where the phone would likely have been in my case so didn't matter that the gps was off, I just wanted to lock it(you can also erase it, but didn't want to do that if at all possible).

I guess you would need to have the codes held in another online account so you could access them, you can guarantee you would need them when you are away from home, so no point hiding them in a safe at home!!
